Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.Primary ResponsibilitiesIn the role of Rail Designer, we’ll count on you to:
  • Support Rail Project Managers and Engineers to develop track and civil design plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Take responsibility for civil and track engineering assignments, including drainage, structural and utilities tasks
  • Develop design criteria, project guides, project meeting notes, and project controls while supporting Project Manager
  • Work independently on small projects or assist more senior engineers on larger projects
  • Give direction to clerical and technical personnel as needed
  • Assist with preliminary and final design packages of rail/transit related projects including rail alignments, railroad geometry, and overall civil site design.
  • Assist with civil design calculations including track design for a variety of railroad-related projects.
  • Assist with project specifications, prepare report figures, and exhibits.
  • Assist in preparation of design drawings, sketches, technical comparisons, and similar technical work as required by assignment.
  • Perform field inspections and serve as on-site construction observer for assigned projects.
  • Provide routine administrative/technical/safety representation at job site.
  • Complete documentation including daily reports, project photographs, etc.
  • Coordinate with clients/owners, other consultants, contractors, subcontractors, materials testers, and others involved with the project.
  • Research design options and document findings for Project Engineers and/or Project Managers.
  • Assist with other duties assigned by Project Engineers and/or Project Managers.
  • Perform work assignments in accordance with established schedules and within prescribed budget.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic work environment assisting on multiple projects at a time.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • EIT or ability to obtain. Candidates hired without their EIT will be titled ’Rail Designer’ until they obtain an EIT
  • Hands-on experience with MicroStation, InRoads and GEOPAK-route design
  • MS Office Applications experience
  • Strong interest in railroad design
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly motivated to successfully interact with clients, the public, and team members
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previously demonstrated design project experience with commuter railroads
  • Software: Microstation, Inroads, Blue beam
