The Project Engineer - Automation, working under moderate supervision, is responsible for providing complex technical support, project development and execution in the areas of design, selection, installation, development, improvements, qualification, and validation of manufacturing equipment, processes, systems, and components. The individual provides technical guidance for new and existing equipment while collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, EHS&S, R&D, Marketing, Supply Chain, Process Excellence, and other departments to identify and address equipment, project and /or validation needs. Conducts research of innovative solutions for potential applications for which there may be no precedents. Finds opportunities (cost saving, capacity, capability, quality, efficiency, reliability, safety, and compliance) and assesses investments required (capital and expense). Leads capital projects at the site. In addition, this person will have knowledge and expertise automated control systems as the primary Automation resource for the facility. In this capacity, the Automation SME will guide and support other site stakeholders to help define standards and strategic approach to any manufacturing automation initiatives, including integration of systems as necessary. This is a technical role involving application administration and limited programming.

Key Responsibilities
  • Under limited supervision and in accordance with all applicable federal, provincial, and local laws/regulations, the Companies’ policies, procedures and guidelines this position:
  • Completes assignments involving management of engineering projects which may include elements of design, development, manufacturing, construction, installation, operation and maintenance, providing direction to both internal and external resources as required.
  • Leads moderately complex projects from concept through post implementation; supports execution activities for more complicated projects.
  • Collaborates with Business Unit Managers to determine Technical and Business Objectives and deliver solutions that meet customer requirements, budgets and schedules, then supports or leads business case development for Capital projects.
  • Conceives, develops, and evaluates solutions for a variety of engineering problems in the categories of safety, quality, compliance, capacity or capability increase, process and cost improvement.
  • Demonstrates and develops Project Management skills. Ensures project status, schedule, and budget are maintained and documented using the provided tools and systems.
  • Leads the execution of line trials, process trials, engineering studies, process qualification and process performance qualification (validation). Uses appropriate data analysis techniques to support conclusions and recommendations
  • Build cross-functional working relationships, share knowledge and mentors other team members.
  • Defines scope, recommends technical solutions, generates equipment specifications, gathers quotations, prepares project plan, and presents business case and project status updates to all levels of management.
  • Create and maintain Change Controls, adhering to strict ALCOA requirements
  • Generate and manage, as assigned, Purchase Requisitions, Purchase Orders, Goods Receipts, and Invoice Mismatches through the Electronic Procurement system.
  • Maintain up-to-date (electronic or physical) files for all engineering documentation (drawings, specifications, manuals) of modifications to machine layouts, equipment designs, and fabricated parts.
  • Ensure projects meet and align with company policies, procedures, quality, environmental health and safety standards, regulatory compliance, and industry standards as applicable.
  • Support or leads equipment and/or process related investigations, using applicable tools (e.g., Kepner Tregoe, Process Excellence, etc.) to facilitate root cause identification and resolution. Author reports as the need arises. Provide technical support to resolve all compliance or audit findings.
  • Oversee and administer automation and digital systems as required.
  • Review and approve technical documentation (i.e. protocols, reports, assessments, etc.) as designate for MAM Site Lead when necessary.

Education

Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is required

Required

Experience and Skills:
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in engineering, technical and/or operations experience
  • Experience programming in RSlogix 500 & 5000, RSView SE & ME, Wonderware,
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with PLCs/PCs, electrical systems, instrumentation, troubleshooting, motor controls systems, industrial networking, as well as IT systems.
  • SCADA and historian design and programming
  • Infrequent local, national, and international travel may be required
  • Proficiency with computer-based programs including email, word processing and databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver projects on time and within budget
  • Must be self-motivated to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be a self-starter, persuasive and flexible in actions and willing to assume leadership of projects as required
  • Positive demeanor, excellent written communication and presentation skills

Preferred
  • Expertise with mechanical and electrical AUTOCAD
  • Previous experience with equipment commissioning, qualification and validation in a food processing or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment
  • Experience with 3D model generation and 3D printing
  • P. Eng designation or progress towards P.Eng. certification
