Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Your role

Start time 11AM MT, based in either Yellowknife or Whitehorse.

CBC North is seeking a full-time reporter to join our award-winning digital team.

The successful applicant will join a small but dedicated group charged with publishing news and features from our Nunavut, N.W.T. and Yukon newsrooms on cbc.ca/north. Reporting to our digital producer in Yellowknife, your primary assignment will be to report, write and edit stories for our website. This could involve reading a large report and summarizing it quickly, or it could involve working with a variety of producers and reporters to repurpose broadcast and current affairs material for a digital audience.

In addition to writing and editing, you will also help curate our digital lineup, contribute to our presence on social media, edit photos, write headlines and cutlines and perform other routine administrative tasks. You may be asked to work with less experienced writers as an editor and writing coach. Skills in creating digital assets — graphs, charts, photo collages, gifs, etc. — would be major assets. Skills in presenting information on radio and television would similarly be strong assets.

Some personal qualities that would be useful in this role include: flexibility and curiosity; knowledge of the culture, history, politics and communities of the North, in particular its Indigenous culture, history, politics and communities; a willingness to work with others; and a willingness to share skills and knowledge around digital storytelling.

This is a pan-northern position, meaning you will be supporting all three of our newsrooms. The successful candidate will be asked to work either early mornings or late evenings, sometimes without supervision.

We Are Looking For a Candidate With The Following
  • Knowledge of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with CBC style or the CBC Language Guide.
  • Ability to travel within Northern Canada on assignment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and occasional overtime.
  • A university degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred, with at least three years relevant experience.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
