Peace Officer Sergeant Permanent and Temporary 2 years

As a Peace Officer Sergeant, you will oversee an operational unit within the Community Standards Peace Officer Section. Using your strong leadership skills you will be responsible for building, coaching and mentoring a high performing team of Peace Officers who provide investigative and enforcement services to the general public, industry, and City Departments, which all contributes to a safer Edmonton.



Additional duties:

  • Oversee operational management by leading, coaching, mentoring and supervising field staff. This includes hiring, training, conducting regular performance appraisals and providing disciplinary action when required
  • Schedule staff covering 18-20 hours a day and 365 days a year
  • Provide input on performance measures, policy development, enforcement measures, and staffing levels to meet operational demands
  • Oversee the application and enforcement of Municipal, Provincial or Federal Laws (limited) by front-line staff
  • Monitor communications and maintain awareness through dispatch of street level deployments to ensure appropriate and timely response levels meet established guidelines
  • Address customer concerns for investigation and resolution, or re-direct for appropriate follow-up
  • Ensure orientations and training records are up to date, consistent, and stored appropriately
  • Be a resource to staff regarding safety and enforcement direction/discretion
  • Respond to general complaints and conduct patrols for authorities under Municipal bylaws, Provincial Acts and Federal Legislation (limited)
  • Assist with coordinating education programs; identify gaps and work to overcome them
  • Identify and train staff to assist with education programs for schools
  • Assist with policy and procedure development and work to ensure that best practices for safety and security are followed
  • Provide field presence to supplement staffing when necessary
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications :
  • Completion of a recognized Diploma related to Conservation Enforcement, Law Enforcement, Security or Criminology; additional supervisory course work is required
  • Minimum 5 years of customer service experience
  • Minimum 3 years of diverse law enforcement experience
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience in a law enforcement role
  • Must possess the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation with completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Program - CPOIP
  • Must be able to obtain or have successfully completed the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) within 4 minutes and 45 seconds (4:45)
  • Strong knowledge of and demonstrated results in the effective application of a uniformed enforcement unit
  • Demonstrated understanding and effectiveness building and supervising high performing teams
  • Professional knowledge of the Peace Officer Program, applicable legislation, provincial requirements and standards
  • Demonstrated skill and experience interpreting and applying various levels of legislation
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a highly ambiguous, dynamic, and demanding day-to-day environment
  • Strong supervisory, leadership, mentorship, and change management skills required
  • Must be able to work independently on confidential, sensitive, and complex issues
  • Skilled in exercising good tact and sound judgement when dealing with difficult situations, and recognize and react appropriately to dangerous situations
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and Occupational Health and Safety is required
  • Knowledge of operational and tactical planning, communication, and good computer literacy
  • Ability to establish and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships
  • Excellent communication, organization, prioritization, and time management skills are required
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • Possession of valid Standard First Aid and Basic CPR certificates
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Hours of Work: 40.00 hours per week. You will be required to work various shifts - weekends and holidays included
