Job Description
Imperial Norman Wells has created a Northern Development Program work experience opportunity within the Environment, Regulatory and Socioeconomic team. This role will provide an immersive and challenging experience for a Sahtu beneficiary passionate about environmental and/or socioeconomic impact management. The term “socioeconomic” refers to the collective social and economic effects that activities can have on the people and communities where we work. Mentorship and training will be available to the successful candidate.

The Environment, Regulatory and Socioeconomic multidisciplinary team is responsible for understanding and mitigating potential impacts from Imperial’s operations upon the environment and the community the team also manages regulatory processes, including consultation and engagement. The ER&S intern will assist in logistical planning, documentation of meetings and community engagement sessions, and related communications. Strategic planning, fieldwork and program development may be available dependent on the intern’s preferred career path, interests and experience.

Norman Wells’ Northern Development Program is an opportunity for local Sahtu beneficiaries to gain practical, hands-on work experience at our Norman Wells operation. On-the-job experience will be supplemented with additional related formal training. Frequent driving on gravel roads is a key component of this position.

Responsibilities
In this role, interns will work with Imperial’s Environmental, Regulatory and Socioeconomic team members to support Norman Wells. This role will be tailored to align with the skills and interests of the successful candidate and business needs. Some job responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the environment and regulatory team to prepare submissions.
  • For example: Sahtu Land and Water Board (SLWB) water licence renewal, Canada Energy Regulator (CER) Operations Authorization, Waste Management Facility Application, Aquatic Effects Monitoring Programs (AEMP) and Interim Closure and Reclamation Plan (ICRP).
  • Coordination, planning and participation in stakeholder engagement sessions
  • Collaboratively develop and prepare stakeholder and community engagement materials
  • Collaboration with environmental consultants and Imperial team to support operations environment tasks (e.g. water and soil sampling)
Qualifications
This posting is intended for applicants who self-identify as Indigenous Sahtu beneficiary.

Academic
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is mandatory
  • Relevant university degree and/or college diploma an asset but not required
Other
  • Positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Clear written and verbal abilities
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Good computer skills, specifically, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • To be considered, you must attach a copy of your enrolment certificate or a proof of membership letter from the Sahtu Enrolment Office or your land corporation office to your application. This information will be used for the purpose of identifying your eligibility for the program. Please do not attach a copy of your membership card.
Work Term: Up to a one year paid internship with possibility of a one year extension. Upon successful completion of the 2 year program, possibility of full-time employment.

Eligibility to work in Canada

All applicants who receive an offer of employment must be eligible to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions on their start date. Proof of eligibility shall be in the form of a Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport, Canadian citizenship certificate, Canadian certificate of permanent residence, Canadian open work permit or receipt from Immigration Canada of an application for a post-graduate work permit . Proof of eligibility must be current and valid (not expired, cancelled or voided). Proof of eligibility will be required if an offer of employment is made. Failure to provide proof of eligibility at least six (6) weeks prior to the start date may result in the offer of employment being rescinded.
