MECHANICAL ENGINEER – BUILDINGS

Quartek Group Inc. is seeking a well organized and self-motivated MECHANICAL ENGINEER to join our growing team in St. Catharines, Ontario. Quartek is a vibrant and growing business delivering engineering, architectural, planning and project management solutions on a variety of commercial, institutional and industrial projects.

Reporting to the mechanical engineering team lead, the successful candidate will be familiar with a variety of commercial, institutional and industrial project types and have a thorough understanding of mechanical engineering requirements for building design. As a member of the Quartek team, this candidate will provide passion for mechanical building services design and be able to prioritize and schedule tasks, and manage projects. The role requires the ability to build strong, direct rapport with our clients, as well as assume the responsibility of delivering accurate, complete and high-quality work.

Role and Responsibilities

  • review of existing documentation;
  • measurements, observations and documentation of existing building and site conditions;
  • liaison with suppliers and/or manufacturers for design support, equipment and component selection;
  • preparation of designs of a range of complexity from simple to complex;
  • preparation of studies, conceptual design, calculations, software analysis, sketches, drawings, reports, letters and other documents relating towater supply; sewerage; pumping; heating; ventilation; air conditioning; energy conservation, efficiency, management and audit; sustainability measures; alternative approaches to heating and cooling; building automation; and related work, all by applying accepted design principles and relevant codes and regulations, and utilizing design aids, software, AutoCAD, Revit, productivity software, etc.;;
  • preparation of technical specifications and tender/contract documentation;
  • attendance at meetings with other disciplines, and email and letter correspondence with peers, clients, consultants, utilities and/or contractors
  • review of design and drawings prepared by other professionals and technical staff with a view to ensuring conformance with applicable standards, codes, legislation, guidelines, etc.;
  • preparation of tender documents and administration of private and public tenders;
  • field review and associated documentation of construction of mechanical works;
  • construction administration including responses to technical queries, review of shop drawings and other contractors submittals, preparation of Site Instructions, Contemplated Change Notices, Change Orders, review of draw requests, payment certification, etc.;
  • management of projects from ‘cradle to grave’, including client liaison, schedules, deliverables, budgets, invoicing, etc.;
  • development and management of client relationships
  • identification and review of opportunities, preparation of fee proposals and general assistance with activities directed at soliciting and securing new work;
  • training and mentorship of other technical staff and interns;
  • assistance with management tasks associated with the continued efficient performance of the mechanical engineering team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in the consulting industry is preferred.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ontario.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, guidelines and regulations applicable to the building industry.
  • Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design environment an asset.
  • Excellent command of the English language and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD; experience with Revit MEP is an asset.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products.
  • Ability to work with tight schedules and control project budgets.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
