We want consistent and predictable operations done the right way, every time.Plains is looking to fill the position of Lab Technician at our fractionation plant located in Fort Saskatchewan, AB. The ideal candidate will excel in a team environment and be responsible for the daily collection and testing of various gas, LPG, water, and chemical samples at the plant. As a member of the Plains Fort Saskatchewan Operations team within Unifor Local 530-A, the successful candidate will report to the Measurement & Quality Supervisor.Responsibilities:- Understand and apply the fundamentals of gas analysis by gas chromatography to operate, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate and / or repair gas chromatographs in accordance with training, design parameters, instructions, assignments, schedules, and priorities set by the supervisor
- Monitor chemical processes and performing the required analytical and physical testing of raw materials and finished product as part of quality assurance
- Set up and obtaining composite sample cylinders in the field
- Interpret and analyze data, compiling results, preparing reports, and presenting conclusions to the team and externally to customers as required
- Ensure adherence to safety standards in accordance with company policy and legislated requirements
- Understand and follow lab ASTM procedures to produce reliable and precise data
- Support troubleshooting and resolution of product quality issues, environmental concerns, and safety issues.
- Ensure adequate inventory of laboratory parts, chemicals, and supplies are always on hand
- Properly store lab chemicals and supplies and dispose of lab waste properly
- Perform routine sampling of hydrocarbon (high and low vapor pressure products) and non-hydrocarbon products, ensuring product meets and / or exceeds product specifications
- Review and evaluate test results and synthesize into reports for internal and external stakeholders (i.e., customers, regulators)
- Generate and maintain records (e.g., service records, third-party lab results) and documentation
- Ensure work area is maintained in a clean and orderly condition
- Assist with engineering and special projects, audits, non-routine inspections, and lessons learned
- Demonstrate competency and assist with functional competency assessments
- Demonstrate understanding of all facility safety and PPE requirements
- Chemical Technology or Chemical Engineering Technology diploma
- Bachelor’s degree in science considered an asset
- 5 years’ experience in a laboratory setting (academic or industry), preferably within the oil and gas industry
- Experience with complex instrumentation and equipment such as gas chromatographs, analyzers, and titrators
- Capable of prioritizing tasks to meet goals and ensure product quality
- Willing to meet on-call obligations as needed
- Strong safety orientation
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Energetic, well-organized, and self-motivated
- Able to carry and lift cylinders weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Able to take direction from senior staff and interact effectively with employees at all levels
- Able to work well under pressure and balance multiple priorities
- Strong computer, database, and problem-solving skills
- Able to maintain positive working relationships with external organizations, vendors, and agencies
- Permanent residency within 120 km of the Fort Saskatchewan facility
- Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract
- Cleared criminal history (background) and satisfactory reference checks
- Compliance with the Company’s drug and alcohol policy including pre-employment D&A testing
- Compliance with the Company’s requirement to be clean shaven to ensure proper fit of emergency PPE
