Fire Alarm/Sprinkler System Technician

Primary Purpose:To provide inspections, testing, maintenance, and installation of building fire protection services. These systems include fire alarm systems, automatic fire sprinklers, fire hose systems, fire pumps, and all vital components of these systems to ensure proper operation. The position supports the completion of regulatory inspections and correction of deficiencies.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Facilities, this position works in a multi-trade environment under variable conditions, indoors, as well as outdoors in all types of weather, and requires moderate to heavy physical labour. Work may be in confined spaces containing asbestos or hazardous materials, as well as tunnels, hatches, crawl spaces and all mechanical areas that may be hot and humid, noisy, light and movement restricted. Evening, weekend, standby with emergency call out, and shift work maybe required in order to accommodate work needs.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Organize, co-ordinate and carry-out the verification of fire alarm and sprinkler systems after installation, renovation, or retrofit; organize, co-ordinate and perform all tests, inspections, installations and verifications program and or download complex fire alarm databases into fire alarm systems as directed by authorities having jurisdiction including University of Saskatchewan Engineers and in accordance with Canadian Fire Alarm Association, Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada, National Fire Protection Association, Fire and Protective Services Bylaw 7990
  • Troubleshoot and repair problematic issues relating to fire alarm and sprinkler systems to ensure proper life safety operations.
  • The successful incumbent is required to understand and uphold University standards and comply with relevant safety acts and regulations including the Building Code and National Fire Code.
  • The successful candidate is also required to provide assessments and preventative maintenance to campus fire systems and recommend and complete appropriate repair solutions.
  • Prioritize repairs based on severity, coordinate projects with assistant managers, planning department, building service technicians, facilities strategic business advisors, etc.
  • Prioritize and identify corrective actions required for daily activities, identify order, and have material in place for repairs. Work with the Saskatoon Fire Inspectors and Workplace Safety.
  • As required, the Fire Alarm Technician/ Sprinkler Fitter Journeyperson may review and interpret electronic and paper design drawings to determine work scope, requirements and prepare estimates. The incumbent may be required to make plans for work in the shop and in the field for clean and efficient installations/repairs.
  • The incumbent coordinates work with other trades; makes recommendations for improvements and/or repair; communicates to others for procurement of materials; promotes and maintains outstanding customer service; is responsible to implement and support workplace initiatives as directed; and makes and meets commitments in a respectful and understanding manner.
  • The Fire Alarm Technician/ Sprinkler Fitter Journeyperson may have other related duties relating to plumbing as assigned and must be aware and mindful of safety hazards and work in compliance with all safety practices.
  • Provide necessary reporting on tests performed, deficiencies found in a timely manner.


Education:

Must hold a certificate in the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA) “Fire Alarm Technology” program and must hold a Valid Red-Seal Sprinkler System Fitter Journeyperson certificate.

The successful applicant for this position will be subject to a satisfactory criminal record check.

Licenses: Must hold and maintain a valid Province of Saskatchewan driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

Experience: Minimum 2 to 4 years of experience working as a dual ticketed Fire Alarm Technician/ Sprinkler Fitter Journeyperson. Experience working in the commercial and/or institutional construction in all facets of fire systems specifically as it would apply to new construction, existing building renovations and regulatory testing requirements. Has installation, troubleshooting and programing experience with the major fire system suppliers/providers including Simplex, Edwards, Notified and Siemens.



Skills: Physical ability to perform moderate and heavy manual labor; the proven ability to assess and determine the appropriate material requirements to successfully complete maintenance repairs and assigned construction tasks; accurately read and interpret blueprints, drawings, wiring diagrams and schematics; recognize and mitigate hazards/risks and apply safe working solutions that meet applicable safety requirements; troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, successfully diagnose the problem and apply the appropriate repairs; use power tools and industry specific tools safely and efficiently; complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines; maintain excellent interpersonal & communication skills.

Demonstrated knowledge of applicable building and fire codes including NFPA 25 is required.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications and knowledge of computer operation is considered an asset for this position. The successful candidate must have effective interpersonal, communication, organizational, troubleshooting and time management skills and the physical ability to perform moderate/heavy physical labour. Demonstrated ability to apply safe work practices and procedures.

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $27.35 - 36.86 per hour. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
