About you and this role - What you would do in this role
Dow has an exciting job opportunity for an early career electrical engineer in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta within the Energy Systems and Environmental Operations (ESEVO) department. ESEVO generates power and steam for the site, operating multiple gas turbines, boilers/heat recovery units, steam turbines, generators, transformers, and power transmission equipment.
As an electrical engineer at ESEVO you will provide technical support and solutions for operations, maintenance, and project teams as well as implement industry best practices, Dow Most Effective Technology (MET), work process, and tools within the electrical discipline. This position is responsible for equipment strategies, preventative maintenance programs and design improvements; it requires conceptual knowledge of theories, techniques and methodology within the electrical technology.
Fort Saskatchewan is the site of Dow’s Path2Zero project, which will create the world’s first net-zero carbon emissions integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives complex. With Path2Zero, the Fort Saskatchewan site will approximately double in size over the next decade.

Responsibilities – Duties, projects, tasks, and activities you would be responsible for in this role.
  • Partner with plant operations and maintenance personnel to secure process data for identification of technology gaps, improvement opportunities, and project definitions.
  • Manage all projects on time, within budget, and delivering the business results; this may be as project manager for small projects or in a supporting role for large capital projects.
  • Motor protection relay replacements, relay work, transducers sourcing, settings, bench testing, construction assistance, and commissioning.
  • Partners with experts to perform advanced troubleshooting and improve and document operating discipline.
  • Review Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) Rules for applicability and provide documentation for tracking; communicate with the AESO as technical lead, provide information where applicable and requests for information.
  • Review outage details and coordination with TransAlta and AltaLink; review load flow impact and communicate to applicable parties (AESO / AltaLink / operations / power traders).
  • Assist and/or lead electrical utility event reviews and reporting.
  • Evaluate and validate improvement opportunities using global tools and maintain the Plant’s Technology Plan.
  • Work to ensure electrical asset compliance with Dow’s process safety standards.
  • Facilitate project reviews for safety, environmental and technical considerations.
  • Provide electrical technical liaison support between operations, the Dow technology center and technical solution teams.
  • Candidate should have strong technical and interpersonal skills; able to perform in an innovative, flexible, open-minded, and lifelong learning environment.
Qualifications – Required education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that are needed for this role (must haves).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without company support or sponsorship.
