OVERVIEW:

Alberta Blue Cross® has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Data Architect to join our innovative and dynamic Information Technology team in this permanent role.

The Data Architect’s role is to strategically architect corporate data and will achieve this by strategically designing, developing, and implementing models for enterprise-level applications and systems. The Data Architect is also responsible for defining data standards and practices. They will be a contributor in the evaluation and selection of infrastructure components such as software, hardware, big data components, and networking capabilities. The Data Architect will act as the primary advocate of data modeling methodologies and data processing best practices.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

STRATEGY AND PLANNING

  • Develop and deliver long-term strategic goals for data architecture vision and standards.
  • Coordinate and work with other technical staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the enterprise data models stay aligned with business needs.
  • Evolve the data architecture to not only meet today’s needs but anticipated business and systems evolution into the future.
  • Plan and work with other technical staff to implement capacity and resource expansion to ensure data lake scalability.
  • Establish processes for governing the identification, collection, and use of corporate metadata; take steps to assure metadata accuracy and validity.
  • Establish data architecture supports effective data quality management.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams to conduct data capacity planning, life cycle, duration, usage requirements, feasibility studies, and other tasks.

OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT

  • Identify inefficiencies and gaps in current architecture.
  • Mentor and/or provide leadership to junior members of the team.
  • Assess and determine governance, stewardship, and frameworks for managing data across the organization.
  • Develop and promote data management methodologies and standards.
  • Address data-related problems regarding systems integration, compatibility, and multiple-platform integration.
  • Act as a leader and advocate of data management.
  • Document the data architecture and environment to maintain a current and accurate view of the larger data picture.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for data reuse, migration, or retirement.

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science, information systems, or computer engineering and/or 20 plus years equivalent work experience.
  • Strong understanding of relational and dimensional modeling, theories, principles, and practices.
  • Applied experience with ER Studio or similar tools.
  • Hands-on experience with data architecting, data mining, large-scale data modeling, and business requirements gathering/analysis.
  • Experience with business processing modeling techniques.
  • Experience in implementing enterprise data management processes, procedures, and decision support.
  • Strong familiarity with metadata management and associated processes.
  • Hands-on knowledge of enterprise repository tools, data modeling tools, data mapping tools, and data profiling tools.
  • Demonstrated expertise with repository creation, and data and information system life cycle methodologies.
  • Experience with business requirements analysis, entity relationship planning, database design, reporting structures.
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent technical architecture and technical support documentation skills.
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to research database issues, standards, and products as required.
  • Ability to present ideas in user friendly language.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
