Job Summary

Reporting to the DEARS Supervisor and supporting the Director of Multicultural and Immigrant Services, the Community Coordinator will be responsible for compiling data/reports and briefs, organizing meetings, providing training, developing and implementing educational and awareness sessions and supporting victims of discrimination, bringing these incidents to the attention of the appropriate tables like the Fraser Valley Human Dignity Coalition or the Abbotsford Local Immigration Partnership Council.

This position helps strengthen relationships through mediating conflict and facilitating discussions between cross-cultural and interfaith groups, researching and enriching diversity education training content, teaching educational workshops, responding to crises and helping people talk about racism, violence, hate crime, heterosexism, religion, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Support victims of discrimination through hearing their story, recording the incident they have experienced and making appropriate referrals (this may be over the phone or in person). Bring these incidents to the attention of the appropriate tables like the Fraser Valley Human Dignity Coalition or the Abbotsford Local Immigration Partnership Council.
  • Provide support to Organizing Against Racism and Hate (OARH) workshops and community projects.
  • In collaboration with the Community Developer, design and develop curriculums, education sessions and trainings.
  • Facilitate workshops, education sessions and trainings.
  • Participate in the Fraser Valley Human Dignity Coalition and serve as a support liaison with stakeholders, community partners and concerned citizens.
  • Assist in managing the evaluation process with participants.
  • Participate in community committees, networking and strategizing with stakeholders and other organizations.
  • In collaboration with the Community Developer, coordinate the planning and execution of community events.
  • Contribute to the Diversity Education Media and Communications Strategy and the programs’ online social media presence.
  • Coordinate projects that further support and drive the ongoing work of the program by assisting in the creation of work plans.
  • Facilitate discussions, including debriefings after large events or conflict situations, when needed.
  • Assist in conducting outreach activities and meet with diverse people, including at-risk youth, young parents, prisoner inmates, seniors, people from lesbian, gay, and transgender communities, people from various religious groups, survivors of violence, refugees, new immigrants, businesspeople, educators, and government workers.
  • Promote, support and advocate for human rights issues, individually and systemically.
  • Coordinate regular group or one-on-one meetings and assist the DEARS Supervisor in coordinating regular program meetings.
  • Participate in program and department meetings, providing regular reporting and updates as requested.

    Abbotsford Local Immigration Partnership (ALIP)

    • Compile data/reports and briefs for the Abbotsford Local Immigration Partnership (ALIP) project.
    • Coordinate meeting reminders, follow-ups and logistical meeting needs.
    • Generate meeting agendas and assist with presentations for the Immigrant Advisory Table and working groups.
    • Assist in planning, organizing, and promoting Council and community-based events that support the mandate of ALIP.
    • Register participants to participate in ALIP events.
    • Provide regular online and social media updating and assist in updating the Media and Communications Strategic Plan for ALIP.

Requirements and Qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
  • Post-secondary education in Human Services or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • A minimum of one-year experience in youth or community programming and facilitation.
  • A minimum of one-year experience building partnerships with community groups and government agencies.
  • Experience giving presentations and facilitating meetings and conversations.
  • Experience in coordinating the work of volunteers is preferred.

Knowledge and Skill Set

  • Strong understanding, sensitivity and knowledge of human rights, diversity and discrimination.
  • Strong verbal, written, and active listening skills; able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Strong competency with computers; able to use Microsoft Office365 particularly Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Able to use virtual meeting platforms like Microsoft Teams and Cisco WebEx.
  • Well-developed presentation and facilitation skills, able to engage an audience and facilitate productive conversation.
  • Strong planning, organizing, and time management skills; able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent relationship building and networking skills; able to build rapport with clients, volunteers, and stakeholders.

Working Conditions

  • This position requires meeting with individuals and prospective employers in-person, whilst adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols.
  • Some meetings will take place virtually.
  • This position may experience frequent interruptions and requires a strong ability to switch tasks.
  • This position may interact with difficult people or people in difficult situations.
  • This position may include some driving for work.
