ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Director, Language & Cultural Affairs, the Cataloging Assistant is to take account of the numerous art pieces and cultural artifacts currently stored in Squamish Nation offices and buildings in the North Vancouver and the Squamish Valley office locations. The incumbent will be responsible for cleaning, inventorying, describing, and cataloguing these art pieces and cultural artifacts.
Ta na wa Ns7éyx̱nitm ta Snew̓iyelh Language and Cultural Affairs Department is working towards the preservation of Squamish history, caring for and taking account of the art pieces and cultural artifacts is an important aspect of this work. The Cataloging Assistant will play an important role in improving the department’s organization of collections.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for Cleaning, inventorying, describing, and cataloguing the Squamish Nation’s cultural artifacts and artwork, currently housed in various offices and buildings.
  • Prepares condition reports.
  • Photographs and documents objects in the Nation’s collections.
  • Responsible for re-housing objects as necessary (labelling storage containers, wrapping objects in acid-free tissue).
  • Constructing custom-made storage containers as necessary.
  • Creates metadata and descriptions of photographs of objects.
  • Contributes cooperatively to the Squamish Nation Language and Cultural affairs team to achieve position and department goals.

Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:

  • Educational background (Certificate or Diploma) in Museum Studies, Indigenous Studies, or Library and Archival Studies from a relevant/related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • 6 – 12 months of directly-related experience in the majority of duties listed in job description including cleaning, inventorying, describing, and cataloguing cultural artifacts and artwork etc.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to software applications, document control, office equipment, administrative procedures, business communications, cleaning, inventorying, describing, and cataloguing cultural artifacts and artwork etc.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, and demonstrated knowledge of Coast Salish and Squamish culture.
  • Good level of computer literacy including spreadsheets.
  • Familiar with conservation and preservation of museum collections.
  • Previous experience in a museum environment is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Squamish or other culture and language is an asset.
  • Experience as an intermediate level user MS Office, the Internet, etc.
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Experience working in a First Nations Community environment is prefer.
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector search as per Squamish Nation Policy.
