Architectural Job Captain – Transportation

As an Architectural Designer-Technical (Job Captain) your efforts will be focused on Project Delivery. You will review reports and design requirements to gain an understanding of the intended outcome and constraints which will inform design activities. You will be responsible for developing and producing efficient and effective technical design solutions according to context, budget, and technical requirements of our clients (mass transit agencies/authorities) and their tenants and partners.

Taking direction from a senior Architect/Designer or Studio Manager, you will be expected to support the management of your projects and participate in planning with clients to prioritize activities and allocate resources that are consistent with project needs and objectives. You will also provide staff leadership throughout all phases of the project, and encourage productivity, teamwork and a high level of professionalism within your team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the delivery of projects, and lead project teams through all phases of the project
  • Represent the organization and interact in a professional manner with clients, sub-consultants, and contractor representatives
  • Provide direction and leadership to members of the design team
  • Act as a single point of contact on project issues
  • Review information from reports and published documents; evaluate and analyze the information to understand broad requirements and constraints for the project
  • Evaluate site conditions, including zoning requirements and site constraints; may meet with authorities having jurisdiction to confirm requirements
  • Perform site surveys and field reviews to accurately document existing and new construction conditions and familiarize with standard building techniques
  • Review design requirements, offer recommendations and develop architectural solutions that satisfy our client’s requirements and comply with all code and jurisdictional requirements
  • May act as concept designer on smaller projects
  • Develop technical designs to ensure that a solution is delivered that meets quality parameters, project timelines and budgetary requirements
  • Direct design activities such as programming, code research, material and building systems research, laying out program components and calculation of program and building areas; refine and direct the development of design options and building details
  • Perform technical reviews and edits to design documents as required
  • Design building components including integration of engineering design, and ensure compliance to applicable codes and jurisdictional requirements
  • Source all materials to be drawn and specified to ensure feasibility and to meet design intent and comply with industry standards
  • Attend meetings to coordinate drawings and resources
  • Prepare permit applications including response letters and coordinate revisions with engineers and consultants, as required, to obtain necessary documentation and permits
  • Track and review project reports, samples, services and shop drawings to ensure adherence to project documents, relevant jurisdictional codes and corporate quality controls
  • Perform site visitations to assess compliance with construction contract and relevant building and safety codes; prepare reports to document the progress; identify deviations from the construction contract and liaise with owner and/or contactor to resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Prepare project change documentation as required
  • Coordinate with contractor, sub-consultants or relevant building authorities to address and document issues with constructability or owner concerns

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of related post-secondary education
  • At least 5 years of experience in architectural design/production and project delivery on transit projects executed in Canada
  • Knowledge of architectural design and presentation, technical writing, and building codes
  • Experience with coordination of architectural design with mechanical, electrical and structural designs/building systems
  • Demonstrated very high proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills

Assets

  • Registration with a relevant professional architectural or technologist association
  • Experience in preparation of design or construction documents on TTC/Metrolinx projects
  • Proficiency with MicroStation
