THIS IS A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT POSITION FOR A BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEE. Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement.
Reporting to the Manager, Co-operative Education & Career Success, as part of a dedicated team, the incumbent’s main focus is to provide enhanced employment preparation support to international students seeking career support, or enrolled in work integrated learning programs. As a local resource on international employment the incumbent may also support the efforts of students looking for international employment opportunities. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Identifying barriers to employment and assisting students to develop job readiness skills and job search strategies for career, co-op, internship and field placement preparation/transition
- Supporting students one-on-one with Canadian workplace expectations, interview preparation, relevant legislations, resume writing, job search techniques, career exploration as well as employer performance expectations and other cultural issues that may be relevant
- Providing workshops regarding relevant employment preparation topics
- Participating in cross-departmental and cross-cultural projects and events to promote the success of international students and co-op programs
- Facilitating referrals to support student needs including working closely with International Student Advisors, Counsellors, Program Coordinators, Accessibility Advisors, Advisors and other internal service areas
- Liaising with Co-op Consultants to support complex issues regarding international student requirements and workplace experiences
- Working closely with employers and agencies to encourage the hiring of international and work abroad students through job development, coaching conversations and event coordination
- Ensuring that documentation, record keeping and client notes are current, accurate and organized using Orbis, Blackboard, and Banner systems
- Investigating and issuing co-op work term PLA credits for international partnership students
- Promoting co-op, work abroad and work integrated learning expectations through in-class sessions and at international orientation and other college events
- Monitoring the success of specific work-terms through individual on-site visits and career discussion with students with respect to work performance and other issues; reviewing the training to ensure learning outcomes have been met
- Gathering current labour market information for students regarding employment trends, skill requirements and other occupational information
- Assisting with specific project initiatives under the direction of the manager (e.g. development and implementation of innovative inspired programs and services)
- Supporting students through pre/post departure and travel planning when researching, preparing for and embarking on go abroad terms
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successfully completed a three-year postsecondary diploma / degree in a related field such as international business, marketing and / or human resources
- Five years of experience in career advising, facilitation of work integrated learning opportunities, and meaningful job development with employers for co-op students and / or recent graduates
- Experience and ability to communicate and work with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds
- Experience coaching on self-advocacy and supporting clients facing barriers to employment through identifying their strengths and employability skills
- Experience developing and facilitating workshops and presentations – particularly with International Student population
- Experience with social media for service promotion, and Microsoft Office Suite in order to develop job search applications, respond to and send email and create presentations
- Experience with a student information system (preferably Banner) and a web-based co-op / career management system (preferably Orbis) in order to enter and maintain student data
- Communication skills (written and oral) to develop and maintain relationships with employers, students and internal stakeholders
- Ability to work independently with initiative and as part of a team
- Knowledge of students’ developmental and learning needs and understanding of the support required for student success in an international education experience
- Time management and organizational skills in order to set priorities, handle multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines
- Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours
- Teaching and Training Adults Certificate and Career Development Practitioner (Graduate Certificate) are considered assets
- Cross cultural awareness training and varied international experience are assets
