Trans Mountain operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 300,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta and British Columbia, and 111 kilometres of pipeline in Washington state.


As the Insurance Manager with Trans Mountain, you will have the opportunity to work with an innovative and creative group of industry experts supporting the operation of the Trans Mountain Pipeline System. This position is based in our Calgary office.

The Insurance Manager will manage the Corporate Insurance Program (the Program), which consists of multiple insurance lines, more than 60 participating insurers, and annual costs of more than $15M.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and evolve a strategic plan for the Program that reflects corporate risk and cost tolerances by liaising with internal stakeholders, seeking advice from the Insurance Broker, and interacting with industry peers.
  • Administer the Program, to ensure that corporate governance and financial requirements are met, by developing and updating budgets and forecasts, directing and reviewing the Insurance Broker’s activities, providing insurance-related advice to internal stakeholders, reporting on progress and highlights, and managing insurance records.
  • Manage the annual renewal process by establishing the renewal plan and the schedule, soliciting, reviewing, and updating corporate and risk information, completing applications, developing and delivering presentations to underwriters, and approving, tracking, and documenting placements.
  • Manage the claims process by reviewing incidents as they occur, filing claims or providing precautionary notices, and administering claims from initiation to conclusion.
  • Support the minimization of contracting risk by evolving the Contractor Insurance Requirements Standard (CIRS), providing advice to internal stakeholders on interpretation of the CIRS requirements, and reviewing and approving variances to the CIRS.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Engineering, or closely related field.
  • A minimum 10 years of related work experience.
  • Proficiency in MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative and strong team player.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex problems and make sound decisions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Other Requirements and Information

  • Location in Calgary.
  • This position will travel approximately 5% of the time, on average.
