Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor

About the Position:
The team leader role is responsible for the day to day operation of the Inorganic area (Analytics & ICP/Hg) which includes analyzing samples using a variety of instrumentation, generating data and maintaining the laboratory and instrumentation. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring analytical quality and meeting the turnaround time commitments established with our clients. The team leader role also ensures the quality program and Occupational Health and Safety requirements are implemented and adhered to.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Prepare samples, reagent, standards and reference material for analysis;
  • Coordination of team personnel and resources to maximize production, quality and efficiency;
  • Perform instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs as required;
  • Complete data processing activities (i.e. data entry in LIMS, calculations, evaluation etc.) and ensure all required documentation is accurate and submitted on time;
  • Work with Account Managers and other client services team members to ensure client needs are met and provide updates in a timely manner;
  • Liaise with manager regarding any issues related to production, quality and efficiency of team;
  • Perform technical decision making for non-routine, complex analysis or matrices;
  • Train and supervise junior staff in accordance with ALS laboratory protocols and procedures;
  • Provide regular updates to the Supervisor on of the performance of team members to assist with performance management and employee relations;
  • Ensure quality program initiatives and Health & Safety requirements are implemented and adhered to by team members;
  • Work closely with other inorganic team leads and assist in other areas of the lab as required;
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the extractions, digestions and analysis methods utilized by the laboratory on the ICP-OES, ICP-MS, Mercury analyser, IC and automated colorimeters (FIAlab/Gallery/Auto) instrumentations. This also includes the literature references that the methods are based on. Updating and/or creating SOP’s and supporting documents;
  • Take the lead role to prepare/validate new work procedures and test methodologies in the ICP/Hg area.
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent English communication skills (verbal, written and reading) required;
  • Proficient in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) at an intermediate level;
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills;
  • Able to perform repetitive tasks correctly in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and think critically in ambiguous situations;
  • Alibility to work independently and as part of a team;
  • A strong work ethic and willingness to initiative on variety tasks as required;
  • A commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or Technical Diploma in Chemistry or a related discipline (required);
  • 2-3 years’ experience in an analytical laboratory or related field experience (required);
  • Previous experience with ICPOES, ICPMS and/or IC instrumentation (required);
Physical Demands
  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs/14kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • Ability to stand for a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
