We are in need of a permanent full-timeHeavy Equipment Operator who will be responsible for operating heavy equipment in a scrap metal yard in a safe and appropriate manner (i.e. material handling machines, excavators with shears, loaders, and skid steers). Primary task includes inspecting, sorting, grading and processing, loading, and unloading trucks. The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in operating heavy equipment of at least 5000 hrs or more and extensive knowledge of their trade. The Heavy Equipment Operator must have strong time management and organizational skills, be both a team player and work well on their own with minimal or no supervision.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must be able to operate the equipment in a safe and productive manner
  • Be compliant with all regulatory requirements and established safe practices
  • Demonstrate skill in the identification of key hazards and use of strategies to work safely, such as: inspecting shred feed, flammables, and heavy iron.
  • Start-up and shut down of equipment safely, by following comprehensive pre-operational checks, star-up, and shutdown procedures.
  • Maintain and monitor equipment, following maintenance procedures and monitoring gauges
  • Keep the equipment and work area clean as often as possible’
  • Help maintenance with repairs if necessary
  • Advise the supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Experience of 3 years as a Heavy Equipment Operator with at least 5000 hrs using material handling machines
  • Good mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or higher)
  • Quick and attentive learner
  • Strong attention to details
  • Working knowledge of safety standards
  • Good English communication skills – verbal & reading
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 to 100 pounds
  • Demonstrate ability to work professionally, respectfully with a positive attitude in a fast-paced working environment
  • High level of personal integrity
  • Strong work ethic and ability to complete work in a timely manner
  • Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Work Conditions & Important Relevant Information:

  • Work location: 550 Messier St.
  • Working hours: MON to FRI, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, some overtime & weekend when the need arises
  • Will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on elevated cabs (up to 15ft high) that are non-smoking
  • Prolonged exposure to loud equipment/machine
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50lbs (or on occasions a little over that with the help of co-workers/tools)
  • Own tools/equipment required: Steel-toed safety boots
