HSE Manager

SUMMARY:

Maintain, develop, and implement HSE program requirements to meet legislation, COR, and customer requirements. This includes but is not limited to HSE documentation, incident investigations, audits, and training while playing an active role in continuous improvement activities. The position will provide internal customer service to the Calgary fabrication site and then transition to supporting the Startec Service sites and team (approx. transition Dec. 2023). Some periodic travel within the region will be required when the position transitions to supporting Startec Service.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as an HSE leader by promoting the HSE management system and positive HSE behaviors
  • Provide HSE support to internal customers and support within the overall business
  • Research, develop, and train safe work practices and procedures to meet HSE legislation, industry, and COR requirements
  • Develop and update HSE documentation (e.g.: JHA, LOTO, Confined Space)
  • Participate/conduct inspections, incident investigations and reporting, formal risk/hazard assessments, and HSE audits
  • Facilitate and administer a Behaviour Based Safety program
  • Develop and deliver safety training/awareness initiatives
  • Maintain pre-qualification programs
  • Administration of a web-based safety data sheet program and web-based contractor management program
  • Administration of the HSE program by Alberta OHS and Environmental legislation, industry standards, and changing business needs
  • Participate/facilitate JHS committee and general safety meetings
  • Develop and coordinate emergency preparedness program
  • Assist with WCB reporting, injury/claims management, transport to medical clinics for acute injury care, and follow-up assessments
  • Complete regular HSE reporting
  • Organize hazardous waste disposal and reporting
  • Regular and visible HSE presence in work areas and during safety-sensitive tasks
  • Work effectively in a team and cross-functional environment as well as complete projects independently

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of HSE experience preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management
  • Safety designation would be an asset (e.g.: CRST, CSO, MSO)
  • Knowledge of OHS, Alberta Environment, and COR program requirements
  • COR auditor certification (preferably ACSA)
  • Valid first aid certificate
  • Valid driver’s license/abstract
  • Ability to periodically travel to remote branches and job sites for meetings, audits, and inspections
  • Exceptional working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to motivate and promote HSE awareness to employees and management
  • Capable of demonstrating visible and professional HSE leadership
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
