Your Opportunity:

Under the direction of the Manager, School Health & Wellness Promotion and as part of Healthy Children & Families within Provincial Population & Public Health, Health Promotion Facilitators support the application of evidence-informed strategies to improve child and youth health outcomes in school authorities across Alberta. This position supports provincial directives by collaborating with school authorities, AHS staff, and other community stakeholders to develop, implement and evaluate school health initiatives consistent with the Comprehensive School Health Framework and current evidence. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the Health Promotion Facilitator uses a settings approach and works at the systems level to: Apply community development principles and facilitation processes to drive action that is informed by local needs, assets, and current evidence. Support, promote and advocate for the development and implementation of health promotion strategies that support healthy school communities and improvements in student health outcomes. Enhance the capacity of teachers and other school staff to support and develop healthy school communities through professional learning and training. Evaluate the status of local strategies and assist with evaluation of provincial strategies. Identify and facilitate connections to resources that can advance health promotion priorities. Build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders who contribute to healthy schools. A remote/hybrid work arrangement from within the Medicine Hat region may be considered.

Description:

As a Health Promotion Facilitator I, you will assist communities to be healthier through mentoring, advocacy and education. You will link individuals and/or communities to relevant health resources within the region or province and work with community partners to access, plan, implement and evaluate health promotion strategies. You will participate in special studies and/or research projects and review health-related data and identify trends relative to population health and at risk groups. You will facilitate the development and/or implementation of program specific guidelines in partnership with other stakeholders. You will plan, develop and facilitate workshops, seminars and presentations for staff and communities. You will prepare work plans, budgets and year end reports and provide input for departmental goals and strategies.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion, Health Sciences, Health Education or a related field.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 2 - 3 years’ experience in health promotion or related field with substantial experience working with complex networks and partnerships. Knowledge and application of the population health promotion model, relevant health promotion strategies and determinants of health. Experience with project/program management and program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Demonstrated ability to develop and apply creative approaches to program/project planning and development. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and interpersonal). Demonstrated critical thinking skills. Able to consider data and information from multiple sources to inform planning and guide decisions. Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a variety of disciplines, sectors, and partners. Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities. Demonstrated ability to facilitate and mobilize diverse groups and build consensus. Skilled in group facilitation, chairing meetings, and development and delivery of effective adult learning sessions. Demonstrated ability in report and grant writing. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.) and virtual meeting software (e.g. Zoom, Skype, Teams).

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in health-related discipline preferred. Comprehensive content expertise in health promotion, particularly related to children and youth. Knowledge of and experience with comprehensive school health / health promoting schools is an asset. Knowledge of and experience working within the education sector, particular in relation to school health promotion is an asset. Fluency in written and oral French is considered an asset.
