Summary Of PositionIf you loveto implement continuous improvements in the environment, health, and safety systems, creating an engaging culture, you’ll want to consider this opportunity.If you get excitedabout being part of a fast-growing, customer-focused company in the pharmaceutical packaging industry, this position is right for you.If you are a naturalself-starter who is interested in a challenging, results-driven position, we want to hear from you.Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety, & Environment (HSE), the HSE Specialist is responsible for leading and supporting the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of environmental, health, and safety management systems; workplace health and safety conditions, reduction of workplace injuries, and ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, codes, and standards. This role will provide on-site leadership and support to create and enforce a culture of safety for the Packaging Services facility.Here are some of the different activities you’ll be asked to do:
  • Lead in the development, implementation, and facilitation of health and safety training, and safe work procedures and programs such as fire safety and evacuation, lockout/tag out, working at heights, ergonomics, etc.
  • Lead and participate in the Joint Health & Safety Committee, continuously developing the committee and the work environment through ongoing support in meetings, inspections, coordination of workplace improvement activities, and education/training.
  • Assess and control hazards and risks to reduce/eliminate incidents.
  • Build and maintain relationships by regularity communicating with colleagues to understand their needs and areas of support.
  • Actively coach and positively influence colleagues on expected and acceptable safety behaviors.
  • Provide hands-on guidance to leadership and supervisors regarding reporting and investigations to ensure corrective actions are completed to prevent reoccurrences.
  • Review proposed new chemicals, processes, equipment, and machinery to ensure risk reduction measures and regulatory requirements are in place.
  • Own and manage WSIB claims management (Worker’s Compensation) and Early & Safe Return to Work Programs.
  • Coordinate activities of the hazardous waste and emergency response programs.
  • Maintain, analyze and report HSE metrics, data, and documentation.
  • Monitor the on-site Contractor Safety program and compliance with applicable regulations.
If You Have The Following Qualifications
  • Completion of a College Diploma/Certificate or University Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related program with equivalent experience.
  • JHSC Certification would be an asset.
  • 3 years of previous HSE experience; experience in a manufacturing facility is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of the OHSA, Environmental Legislation, WSIB policies, and procedures, claims management, incident investigations, and Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Previous experience investigating incidents, developing programs, and conducting training.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills (MS Office).
  • Excellent ability to coach and influence others.
  • Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to communicate and collaborate.
  • Able to work independently but provide strong support to the team as and when requested.
  • Excellent written communication skills (reporting, compiling data, information, etc.).
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and project management skills.
