Who we are…

The Yukon Bureau of Statistics (YBS) is a branch of the Yukon Government in the Department of Finance. The Bureau helps governments, businesses and residents of Yukon make informed decisions with the provision of timely and reliable statistical information. YBS collects, analyses and publishes statistical information, and works on statistical research projects and data modelling.

YBS collaborates with and assists YG departments in providing professional expertise and support in data collection, analysis and statistical research. The Bureau also collaborates with Statistics Canada, other federal departments, and provincial/territorial statistical agencies on matters of mutual interest and exchanges ideas and information with them.


The opportunity…

The Senior Information Officer is responsible for managing the Information Services Unit of YBS. Primary duties of the position include, among others: (a) leading analyses and interpretation of data to transform data into information; (b) leading the development of comprehensive analytical and methodological reports and presentations; (c) managing the design, printing and distribution of all YBS publications; (d) responding to data requests and media queries; and (e) collaborating with and/or participating in statistical research programs and projects.

The successful candidate will:

  • identify and analyze short-term movements and long-term trends in statistical data in the demographic, economic, labour market, housing, social and environmental statistics fields;
  • present and explain any changes in statistical data in the contexts of the relevant subject-matter and local conditions to senior managers, data users, and media;
  • participate in the analysis of statistical data and in the preparation of analytical materials for publication;
  • provide feedback on data collection, analysis and presentation methods and procedures, and the improvement of survey questionnaires;
  • provide data along with their implications and limitations to users in Yukon government departments, other governments and external users; and
  • participate in subject-matter studies and reviews to support the work of project teams or YBS management.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics or a relevant social science discipline;
  • Significant experience in researching and compiling statistical information, analyzing data and writing reports;
  • Significant experience in maintaining and updating data files, data visualization and working with desktop publishing applications (e.g., Adobe InDesign);
  • Experience in dealing with client requests and media queries; and
  • Knowledge of Statistics Canada’s data and analytical products.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.
