This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Health Service Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process, critical thinking and problem solving skills to provide holistic care to individuals requiring hemodialysis.

The RN is responsible for the overall coordination and direction of nursing care. The RN provides clinical leadership particularly in complex or unpredictable patient care settings. The RN has the knowledge, skill and judgment needed to provide competent, evidenced based nursing practice.

The RN is accountable for the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of the plan of care to achieve patient outcomes. As a member of a collaborative care team works with other disciplines to co-ordinate care to achieve patient/family outcomes.

The RN supports the development of students and colleagues through acting as a preceptor and providing ongoing mentorship. The RN contributes to the efficient and effective functioning of the service/unit, coordination of patient care, staffing and/or other resources as required. The RN accepts responsibility for maintaining and continually enhancing competencies through ongoing professional development including participation in education programs, research and continuous quality activities.

The RN practices according to the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses, the Nova Scotia College of Nursing Standards of Nursing Practice, specialty standards as applicable and the policies and procedures of the Nova Scotia Health Authority. The RN is responsible and accountable for his/her nursing practice and conduct as defined by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing and for ensuring that his/her registration is current and valid.

As an RN in an in-centre hemodialysis unit you will provide nursing care for acute and chronic hemodialysis patients as well as hemodialysis in critical care areas.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required
  • Current registration with the NSCN required
  • Current BLS required
  • Hemodialysis experience preferred
  • C Neph Certification is an asset
  • Basic computer skills are required
  • Ability to work in a highly technical area
  • Must be able to perform duties that involve lifting, bending and stretching
  • Ability to work independently in a team environment
  • Knowledge of nursing standards, protocols as required in area of nursing specialty related to job assignment and according to NSCN
  • Knowledge of the nursing process and basic nursing care procedures
  • Scope of practice as defined by NSCN and Registered Nurses Act (2001)
  • Ability to balance numerous demands and conflicting priorities
  • Ability to work within a team environment and to effectively contribute to patient care planning
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and ability to adapt communication styles to meet the needs of the specific patients and other health care team members
  • Assessment skills to recognize and respond appropriately to patient change in status
  • Ability and desire to provide holistic patient and family centered care
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Judgment
  • Supports a respectful, team oriented workplace
  • Competencies in other languages is an asset, French preferred

Hours of Work

Permanent, Part-Time (60%) position; 45 hours bi-weekly

Salary Information

$35.2108 - $41.4848

($42.9366 with 25 years RN experience).
