VARIOUS POSITIONS
PROJECT COORDINATOR IN NUNAVIK, EEYOU ISTCHEE, AND OTHER FIRST NATIONS COMMUNITIES

FROM AUGUST 2021 TO JUNE 2022

Youth Fusion is a registered non-profit, non-partisan organization that promotes school perseverance by engaging students in creative and motivating extra-curricular and in class activities. These projects aim to value and cultivate the abilities and interests of young people so that everyone can achieve their potential, both at school and in the community. Project coordinators in Indigenous communities have 3 main areas of activity:

  • Organizing extra-curricular activities related to the project domain;
  • Working with teachers to develop and animate classroom activities that help make academic knowledge more relevant for teenagers;
  • Working with local organizations to help create links between the school and community.

Since January 2010, Youth Fusion has been offering projects in various First Nations and Inuit communities. As of today, we collaborate with several Nations (cree, inuit, innu, mi’kmaq, atikamekw and kanien’kehà: ka).

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend the Youth Fusion training week;
  • Create, organize and lead engaging activities for elementary and/or high school students;
  • Fill-out and submit bi-weekly timesheets, reports and expense reports;
  • Managing a small budget for the project and the material inventory;
  • Communicating with Youth Fusion and the school principal on a weekly basis;
  • Communicate and collaborate with school staff as well as external partners in the implementation of projects, activities and special events;
  • Taking part in monthly phone call with Youth Fusion coordinators from the same program;
  • Surveying students and local partners to get feedback about activities;
  • Submitting a mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.

CONDITIONS BY REGION

Positions are available in several regions; project coordinators will be matched according to their interests and those of local students.

Duration of employment: Contractual position, from August to June. Possibility of renewal.
Specifics: Must remain in the community for the duration of the contract. However, flights will be provided by the employer to/from Montréal for a holiday break in December, and one in the Spring.

Hour/week: 37.5 hours/week
Salary: $18,50/hour + $1.50/hour remoteness premium

Food allowance: $200/week (Nunavik) and $150/week (all other regions)
Accommodation: Accommodation provided at no cost to the coordinator (possibility of sharing with Youth Fusion colleagues or teaching staff).
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to provide housing for dependents and spouse

Other benefits: Coverage of costs for internet and telephone.
Transportation to and from the community provided.
Opportunities for internship recognition.

Covid-19:Coordinators traveling to communities may be required to get tested for Covid-19 prior to departure, in addition to a 14-day quarantine upon arrival in the community.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Must be a university student or recent graduate in a relevant discipline;
  • Must have experience working with youth;
  • Experience with First Nation and Inuit communities and knowledge of Indigenous issues in Canada is an asset;
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset;
  • Knowledge of the cultures and traditions of one or more Indigenous nation and experience working with Indigenous communities and individuals. (Asset)

SKILLS

  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently;
  • Motivation, initiative, persistence, flexibility, communication skills, vision and creativity are essential;
  • Office Suite.

LANGUAGE

  • Spoken and written English;
  • Spoken and written French;
  • Written and/or oral knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.

FOR LOCAL HIRES

  • Indigenous applicants are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Some of the above requirements can be waived for local applicants;
  • According to our agreement with the Cree School Board and Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, we cannot offer housing for local hires. However, the food, phone, and internet allowance will still be granted.

Verification is required to work with a vulnerable clientele. This check is done when hiring.
