Job Summary/General Accountability

Teck Resources has made mining autonomy a central element of the RACE program and is actively deploying or testing autonomous haul trucks and drills: https://www.teck.com/technology/

Reporting to Teck’s Manager of Autonomy, the Program Manager, Open & Autonomous Haulage is accountable for the day-to-day coordination of Teck’s efforts to develop partnerships, software and related technology that are aimed at ensuring mining autonomy options exist for Teck that allow flexibility in terms of fleet composition, enable advancement to “Level 5” autonomy and the integration of tools developed for conventional vehicles as part of the RACE program to autonomous haul systems.

This role is an exciting opportunity to enable open autonomy as a central element of Teck’s RACE program.

Key Accountabilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Coordinate the day-to-day activities of Teck’s Open and Autonomous Haulage Program including
    • Creation of business cases/valuations
    • Development and management of partnerships including but not limited to OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), fleet management systems providers, autonomy software developers/integrators and others
    • Establishment of multi-year roadmaps
    • Coordination of any on site testing and trials to ensure they are executed safety and with clarity on scope and results
    • Integration with other Teck efforts including decarbonization
    • Acting as an internal subject matter expert for the RACE21TM team, including both formal mechanisms (“101s”, “Lunch and Learns”, “Team Learning Sessions”) and informal coaching

    Key Competencies

    The successful candidate’s core competency will be a proven ability to coordinate the work of diverse teams composed of internal and external individuals with disparate competencies such as the deployment and optimization of autonomous haulage, autonomy software development, systems integration, and commercial relationship management. Teck recognizes this is a unique role and is open to applicants with a variety of backgrounds including those from outside the mining industry. The successful candidate will have experience in one or more of:

    • Domain expertise in autonomous haulage
    • Engineering or operational surface mining experience
    • Involvement in the development or deployment of fleet management systems
    • Autonomy software development experience

    Other Relevant, Non-technical Competencies Include

    • A background in coordinate multiple external vendors simultaneously
    • High tolerance for ambiguity and rapidly evolving environments
    • Very effective interpersonal skills including mentoring, coaching, collaborating, networking, providing and receiving feedback and team building and experience interacting with individuals from both technology organizations and operational sites, at all levels of an organization
    • Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills with an ability to manage competing demands
    • B.A. or B.Sc. or equivalent experience is required; M.A. or M.Sc. is a plus
