The Bishop of Yukon is seeking to appoint a priest to the parish of Whitehorse. The parish currently has two congregations, Christ Church Cathedral and Church of the Northern Apostles.

These two long time congregations are seeking someone to assist them in the changing climate of the church and the reality of their present situations. A committed group of individuals from each congregation is working to explore opportunities for joint ministry and mission. Their desire is to maintain both congregations, at the same time recognizing the difficulties that exist. Each congregation currently has licensed lay ministers and others who assist with services and a variety of other congregational roles, some paid and some volunteer. There is a retired priest in Whitehorse willing, and able, to support service scheduling.

We are seeking an engaging and energetic priest who is open to thinking outside the box, open to a variety of worship forms: BCP, BAS, and new forms of worship, who will challenge us to embrace our role in God’s kingdom, and will walk alongside us as we navigate the rapidly changing places and positions in which we often find ourselves. The Diocese needs creative, adventurous, and encouraging leadership to journey with us in the immense opportunities for growth in God’s mission.

The Diocese of Yukon has been, and continues to be, on a journey of learning what it means to live the Marks of Mission and our baptismal promises. We are privileged to live and work among 14 Yukon First Nations and 4 First Nations of Northern British Columbia. We are committed to truth and reconciliation, and walking with our Indigenous peoples.

The rector of the cathedral has traditionally been the Dean of the Diocese. Our current diocesan reality enables us to consider changes to tradition and structure, creating opportunity for exploration and conversation with the Bishop. It is not expected that the successful applicant will undertake this role immediately, if at all.

The city of Whitehorse has a population of approximately 28,500. According to Canada’s 2021 census numbers, Yukon led the country in terms of population growth since 2016, increasing by 12.1 per cent and bringing its population from 35,874 to 40,232. Our college officially became Yukon University in May 2020 and has been recognized for many achievements. There are 14 schools in Whitehorse, including elementary, high school and French first language. The territory offers many opportunities for multi-season sports, leisure, camping, and recreation. Our diversity offers an incredible array of cafes, markets, arts and culture and entertainment opportunities, and vast community participation and development opportunities.

The Diocese of Yukon is a member diocese of The Council of the North. Salary is in keeping with the council policy. A rectory is supplied suitable for a family.

Clergy from the wider church must be in good standing, and must have their bishop’s permission to apply for positions outside their own diocese. A criminal record check should be included with your application.

Application should be made to:
The Rt Rev Lesley Wheeler-Dame, Bishop
