The Manager, Laboratory Operations is responsible for overseeing the overall operation of teaching and research laboratories, specialized departmental facilities, equipment, technical resources, and building infrastructure for the Department of Physics at both the Burnaby and Surrey campuses. This role monitors the department’s safety operations, oversees repairs and renovations, supervises technical staff supporting teaching and research programs, and contributes to the development and implementation of the department’s strategic directives.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Physics or a related discipline and five years related experience in the management of teaching and research laboratories and operations in a university or institutional environment, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Excellent knowledge of physics teaching and research standards, physics laboratory requirements and configurations.
- Familiarity with the principles of planning, design and construction of physics laboratory facilities.
- Good knowledge and experience with physics laboratory equipment, instrumentation, facilities, operations and procedures (e.g. vacuum systems, cryogenics, imaging systems).
- Good knowledge and experience with machine shop practice and equipment.
- Good knowledge of related laboratory health and safety guidelines/regulations (University, Provincial, Federal), risk management assessment, laboratory hazards (e.g., lasers, radioisotopes, chemicals, biologicals), and safety equipment/procedures.
- Excellent planning, organizational, and analytical reasoning skills.
- Excellent negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent financial and personnel management skills.
- Excellent supervisory and team management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.
- Ability to interact cooperatively with people of differing personalities within the Department, in other university departments, and with others involved in internal/external support services.
- Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and procedures.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and meet multiple and competing demands.
- Ability to use computer-aided design (CAD) software, and word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email applications with a PC or Mac computer.
- Ability to use enterprise systems including purchase requisition, payroll reporting, and student information systems.
- Ability to exercise professional and mature judgment and to handle confidential/sensitive material with discretion.
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with others, and to meet deadlines.
