Primary Purpose: To respond to the needs of current and prospective Indigenous graduate students by developing resources and building peer networking and professional development opportunities in a culturally safe environment. Support central recruitment efforts of Indigenous graduate students. Support the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (CGPS) development of an Indigenous strategy, including Decolonization.

Nature of Work: The position dually reports to the Dean, College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and Project Manager, in the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement (OVPIE). The coordinator has a high degree of independence and will be required to excel in a fast-paced environment.

The work will be project-based focused on building resources and program(s) for mentorship, networking and professional development opportunities for Indigenous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (PDFs). The work requires innovative thinking, excellent judgment, and the ability to manage sensitive situations with a strong commitment to creating an exceptional experience for Indigenous graduate students and PDFs.

Requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team.The coordinator will work within the Oyateki Partnership and collaboratively with college staff and with campus partners including the Aboriginal Students’ Centre, GSA Vice President Indigenous Engagement, staff in colleges, Indigenous students and alumni. Working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers across programs and within the OVPIE and Oyateki initiatives.

In the longer term, the coordinator will act as a program coordinator and as the primary point of contact from CGPS for all Indigenous graduate students and liaise with other units within the college as appropriate to support students and college initiatives.

Accountabilities
  • Investigate resources and mentorship/professional development models for Indigenous graduate students at institutions in Canada and abroad.
  • Engage with Indigenous graduate students to co-create the development of recommendations and implementation plans for a peer mentoring network and professional development opportunities for Indigenous graduate students and/or the redesign of existing professional development activities.
  • Review CGPS website and communication channels to ensure content is relevant, appropriate, and meeting the needs of current and prospective Indigenous graduate students.
  • Support central recruitment activities including creating opportunities to engage undergraduate students and connecting them to graduate students as advisors or mentors.
  • Organize workshops and events for Indigenous graduate students, including orientation and professional development opportunities.
  • Support development of an Indigenous strategy for CGPS aligned with ohpahotân|oohpaahotaan through performing research under the direction of a faculty member or senior staff in the college and OVPIE.Various projects will emanate from the strategy once in place.
  • Provide recommendations to the CGPS Dean’s leadership team on decolonization of CGPS structures, policies, and procedures.
  • Serve as a point of first contact and facilitator in CGPS for inquiries from prospective Indigenous graduate students and provide accurate and timely interpretation and communication of policies and processes for prospective and current Indigenous graduate students.
  • Welcome, on-board, and engage Indigenous graduate students on behalf of CGPS.
  • Assist current Indigenous graduate students to navigate CGPS and the wider university system.
  • Provide advice and guidance to Indigenous graduate students regarding scholarship and award opportunities including the Indigenous Graduate Leadership Award and Queen Elizabeth II Aboriginal scholarships.
  • Support the selection and nomination processes for Indigenous Achievement Week awards for graduate students.
Qualifications

An Indigenous person (First Nation, Inuit or Métis) with membership documentation.

Education:Completion of a graduate degree.

Experience:Three years of relatable experience in a university setting . Experience in program design, program evaluation and event coordination is desirable.

Skills: Have knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing, Indigenous research methodologies, and understand the importance of building strong and caring relationships with Indigenous communities. Ability to gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources and generate recommendations and reports. Display ability to set priorities while achieving goals and objectives in an appropriate time frame. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Demonstrated relationship-building skills.

Understanding of the graduate student experience and appreciation for the diversity of disciplines within the institution. Knowledge of CGPS and university policies, procedures, and decision-making processes is an asset. Proficiency working in Microsoft Office 365.
