Fisheries Technician - Yukon Rapids Fish Hatchery
Whitehorse, YT; – Full-Time Permanent

About the Role
Reporting to the Hatchery Supervisor, this role is responsible to support the operations of the Yukon Rapids Fish Hatchery.
Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the fish hatchery operation in full compliance with designated fish culture practices and disease prevention protocols for optimal growth and good health of all hatchery species.
  • Ensures that all supplies, provisions and equipment necessary for fish culture are available when required.
  • Operate, inspect, adjust and maintain the hatchery equipment including but not limited to automatic fish feeders, pressurized cleaning units, main well pump and speed controller, emergency generator, oxygenation system, and other equipment required for good fish husbandry.
  • Ensure the proper function of all fish culture equipment, components and facilities.
  • Responsible for providing assistance and support for related activities such as annual tagging, designated studies and research projects and public relations events.
  • Report editing, formatting, and compilation.
  • Interaction and liaison with clients and/or government regulatory agencies as directed by the
  • Monitor and promote system environmental health and worker safety compliance.
  • Related office tasks, including filing and reception on as a needed basis.
  • All other duties as required.

About You

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in aquaculture, fisheries science or related field.
  • Minimum one year of previous related experience.
  • Solid knowledge of fish culture practices and disease prevention protocols.
  • Working schedule will require work every other weekend and statutory holiday as required.
  • Required to be on-call in case of emergency at the hatchery.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
