Job Summary:

The incumbent assists with ensuring the operation and maintenance of the City’s greenspaces.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assists with co-ordination and performs the operation and maintenance of the turf, trees and gardens in parks, trails, boulevards and playgrounds and responds to the public and community group demands. Assists with flowers and trees in the cemetery and campground when requested.
2. Directs, assigns, checks and maintains the flow of work of staff assigned to their crew and provides input to performance appraisals.
3. Follows and ensures reporting staff follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards and ensures equipment is maintained in safe and working order.
4. Enforces established standards of conduct and decorum.
5. Answers or distributes enquiries and distributes information.
6. Under the direction of the Parks Leadhand/Parks Supervisor maintains statistics, prepares reports and contributes to the grounds budget development and implementation.
7. Maintains equipment inventory, researches and purchases supplies and materials, and prepares preliminary proposal calls and tenders.
8. Acts as Parks Leadhand as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Hours of work - 4 x 10 hour shifts/week, 0700 - 1730 hours, Monday - Friday. Work is primarily outside so exposed to inclement weather.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • 1 year Certificate in Turf Management or Horticulture
  • Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C - 16 hours
  • Valid Pesticides Applicators License Course - 40 hours
  • Previous Experience - 2 years related experience in the operation and maintenance of greenspaces, including experience in a senior capacity
  • On-the-Job Experience - 2.5 months
  • Priority setting, supervisory, interpersonal and team player abilities.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Grounds and maintenance equipment, irrigation equipment, janitorial equipment, basic carpentry and small power tools, communications and office equipment, and computer with applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and ERP and City vehicles, water truck, trailers and bobcat.
