Consultant of Student Services

Reporting to the Coordinator of Student Services, for the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education.


Qualifications and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the NS Inclusive Education Policy and a clear understanding of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support framework;
  • Demonstrates leadership in and has a thorough knowledge of Tier 1 evidence-based practices and experience and understanding in how to help teachers in Gr. P-12 strengthen these practices;
  • Experience and knowledge in building staff skills with equitable data-driven decision-making processes through collaboration;
  • Experience and knowledge in coaching staff to build capacity and strengthen collective teacher efficacy through effective implementation of MTSS in school-based service delivery models;
  • A minimum of five years successful classroom teaching experience, and 3 years experience in teaching Resource; including demonstrated effective programming skills for students with complex academic, social-emotional and behavioural challenges;
  • Master’s Degree in Education (Inclusive Education preferred);
  • Relevant training and/or experience with developing effective and responsive school-based service delivery models of support; extensive training and experience in programming for students with Autism, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Behaviour challenges and Trauma-informed practices;
  • Familiarity with, and/or experience working in multi-disciplinary inter-sectorial programs for communities that are marginalized;
  • Excellent leadership, relational, team building, communication and interpersonal skills/abilities;
  • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, thoroughness and timeliness in completion of work tasks;
  • Consistently demonstrates high-level of professionalism;
  • Ability to see the “big picture/broad view” and to connect the System Improvement Plan, Student Success Plans, initiatives, policies, guidelines and professional learning to other provincial and regional priorities;
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills and positively contributes to team problem-solving sessions;
  • Demonstrates strong skills in developing schedules and programming to support achievement and well-being.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate on school teams (Teaching Support Teams and Student Planning Teams) in the capacity of a leader, a Knowledgeable Other, to assist in the development, implementation, progress monitoring and evaluation of complex situations for individuals and groups of students, in supporting the implementation of MTSS and service delivery models;
  • Work with school teams and individual teachers in providing programming for students with complex academic, social-emotional and behavioural challenges;
  • Contribute to the assessment of and programming for students with complex academic, social-emotional and behavioural challenges;
  • Support school teams with the creation of and implementation of adaptations, IPPs and other individual plans;
  • Provide leadership to Student Services staff, Learning Support Teachers, school staff and Administrators;
  • Provide professional development and training opportunities as determined by the Coordinator of Student Services;
  • Assist schools in problem-solving around complex situations involving students;
  • Provide leadership in the area of MTSS, Teaching Support Teams, Tier 1 universal strategies, and other as directed by the Coordinator of Student Services;
  • Cooperate and collaborate with other team members in the development and implementation of programs to support teachers to more effectively support students;
  • Assist schools in problem solving around support for students in all 3 tiers.
