TITLE: CLASS 2 FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR

REPORTS TO: CHIEF FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR/FLIGHT TRAINING UNIT MANAGER

STATUS: PERMANENT, Full-Time position, Saturday to Wednesday Schedule.

RATE: $50.00/hour Instructing Rate, $31.60/hour Ground School/Admin Rate, with additional compensation for supervision of Class 3 & 4 Instructors*

START DATE: March 1, 2022.

PURPOSE OF POSITION/MISSION STATEMENT:

As part of the Alkan Air flight training team, you are expected to provide quality instruction to students in a safe and efficient manner while following the Alkan Air syllabus and respecting the Canadian Aviation Regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid Transport Canada Class 2 Flight Instructor Rating Mandatory

Job-Specific Duties:

• It is your responsibility to follow the Alkan Air Flight Instructing syllabus and to teach students accordingly, bringing any questions or concerns to the attention of the Chief Flight Instructor.
• It is your responsibility to ensure that all appropriate paperwork is completed for each flight. This includes Daily Flight Record, PTRs and aircraft logbooks.
• It is your responsibility to follow established Safe Working Procedures and to be actively involved in the Safety and Quality Management System by identifying and reporting any hazards to a safe operation.
• It is your responsibility to arrive in a timely manner before your flight booking to ensure you are ready when the student arrives.
• As a Class 2 Instructor, you will be responsible for supervising Class 4 & 3 Instructors when CFI is not working.
• While supervising a solo student you must be present at minimum at the beginning and end of the flight but it is preferred that you are on site during the solo flight.
• It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit to fly and have your medical/optical exams completed routinely.
• Time sheets are to be handed in promptly on the morning of the 23rd of each month.
• It is the dual responsibility of yourself and Alkan Air to ensure that all of your initial and recurrent training courses are completed prior to their anniversary date and that your Pilot File is in current standing. All memos that are distributed are to be read and signed.
• You are to understand that in addition to flying aircraft, you are also expected to ensure that the aircraft you use are left in a clean and tidy manner. From time to time you may also be asked to wash the aircraft.
• You may be required to perform other duties unrelated to your position as they arise.

I moved up to Whitehorse largely on a whim, knowing one person. Looking back on that decision, I can confidently say it was one of the best I have ever made.

To begin, Whitehorse is incredible, the city itself has tons to do, I joined a cycling club, made a great friend group and have been able to really enjoy the outdoor lifestyle the city offers. I particularly enjoy driving or biking to Carcross and the Southern Lakes on my days off, eating at local restaurants and going to cabins with friends. Summer has almost 24 hours of daylight and winter brings the Northern Lights and great sunrises.

Alkan is a great company, everyone is friendly and management has our backs. I have found that I can always trust my coworkers and managers which helps me to focus on doing my best at work. It’s a unique experience working in the north, you form bonds with the people around you, kind of like a community. It is a genuinely rewarding experience. I always look forward to company BBQs, team building events and holiday parties where we get to hang out and relax as a group.

To sum up my experience moving to Whitehorse and working at Alkan, it really has been amazing. I have an enjoyable lifestyle, great coworkers and exciting career prospects at Alkan Air.
