Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the supervision of Supervisor of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Laboratories, the incumbent supports the teaching and research activities in the laboratories in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The incumbent is responsible for the electrical and mechanical aspects of the equipment in the laboratory. They will assemble and maintain equipment, components and specimens to meet the teaching and research needs of the students and faculty. The incumbent assists in the planning and operation of experimental projects and will be knowledgeable in data acquisition systems, and maintain, troubleshoot and repair, such systems as needed to ensure their optimal operational status.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
  • Highly competent in physical testing of civil engineering materials.
  • Proficient in designing test procedures and manufacturing/testing equipment.
  • Skills or knowledge in welding, machine shop, and woodworking practices.
  • Technologist training with relevant experience; engineering degrees and suitable experience also considered.
  • Understanding of principles and applications in Civil Engineering.
  • Comprehension of experimental needs for accuracy, reliability, and cost.
  • Knowledge and experience with data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with civil engineering materials, including properties and construction techniques.
  • Experience in overseeing laboratory testing, equipment maintenance, and specimen testing.
  • Proficiency in control and data acquisition equipment, with preference for LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI experience.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
  • Completion of a 3-year Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Civil Engineering Technology program. This must include a knowledge and understanding of electronic data acquisition
systems and equipment, including measuring devices, construction safety, the
Occupational Health & Safety Act, Ontario Regulations for Construction Projects, and
other applicable codes, standards and guidelines.
  • Five years of experience in a civil or mechanical engineering laboratory, or maintaining data acquisition systems. This preferably includes experience in overseeing structure and
construction material laboratory testing (e.g., steel, concrete, masonry, timber, soils,
aggregates, asphalt); administering maintenance of lab equipment; completing specimen testing; using a broad variety of control and data acquisition equipment, instrumentation
and software. Experience in LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI environments will be an asset.
