Who you are

You are a professional engineer with excellent attention to detail, who can concurrently manage multiple projects while ensuring deadlines are met. Commitment to continuously learning and the flexibility to work on ever-changing technical files are important characteristics. You should be comfortable working independently while contributing to team outcomes with good oral and written communication skills when working with internal and external stakeholders.

What you’ll do

The Certification Engineer is a fully qualified professional engineer with responsibilities covering a broad range of activities concerning the certification of design of transport packages, Class II prescribed equipment and radiation devices to ensure the safety of workers and the public from the use of these prescribed equipment in Canada. This may include assessments of safety cases submitted by the applicants, reviewing transport licence applications, participating in the development of national and international regulations or standards and providing scientific and technical assistance as needed. In addition, you’ll also take on special duties related to the safe transport of nuclear substances and the certification of prescribed equipment. You may be asked to participate in IAEA activities on transport related issues on behalf of the CNSC.

Essential Qualifications: Education:
  • University degree in Engineering (preferably in Mechanical, Civil or Nuclear).
  • A provincial designation as a registered Professional Engineer in good standing is required.
Language Requirements:
English essential

Experience:
  • Performing mechanical, thermal and structural design and analysis and/or safety assessments (preferably in the nuclear sector)
  • Working in a cross-functional team
Knowledge of:
  • Engineering subject areas such as: structural mechanics, thermal engineering, material science, quality assurance, computer analysis techniques
Ability:
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Analyze issues and make recommendations.
  • Prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Provide advice and make recommendations to clients and/or management.

Asset Qualification:
  • Technical report writing capabilities
  • Experience with design of packages used to transport nuclear substances, radiation devices or class II prescribed equipment
  • Specialization in one or more of the following areas: structural mechanics, finite element analysis, thermodynamics, heat transfer, criticality, welding, material science, quality assurance
  • Application of commercial software, such as ANSYS or MicroShield
Operational Needs:
All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive.
