Anatomy Laboratory Assistant

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Anatomy Laboratory Assistant-Simulation Operation Specialist will have dual responsibility for both anatomy lab and simulation.

Anatomy Responsibilities include: designing, implementing and coordinating gross anatomy and neuroanatomy laboratories in accordance with course, departmental and college objectives.

Simulation Operations responsibilities include: working alongside simulation staff at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus’s Dilawri Simulation Centre to help develop and lead the way forward utilizing current technologies (audiovisual, multimedia equipment, human manikin simulation equipment) and embracing new innovative and creative technologies to further enhance the education medical learners and prepare them for their future roles in the healthcare industry. The incumbent will work as a simulation champion in the Dilawri Simulation Centre, assist with advancing technology, and keep abreast with the national and international simulation trends.

NATURE OF WORK: Anatomy: Reporting to the manager of the Dilawri Simulation Center in collaboration with the Manager, Administration & Finance, College of Medicine-Regina Campus, the Anatomy Laboratory Assistant works in collaboration with faculty, simulation attendants and laboratory teaching staff. This person will be required to liaise regularly with the Saskatoon Campus Anatomy Lab staff to coordinate movement of specimens between campuses and to ensure continuity with anatomy lab activities. This person will be responsible for the health and safety of other workers and students in the class labs. Considerable discretion is required as this individual is privy to and works with confidential student information. The individual in this position must effectively exercise professional judgement to deal with emerging and unpredictable events which could impact the department – faculty, support staff, graduate students, undergraduate students and student services and programs.

Simulation: Reporting to the manager of the Dilawri Simulation Center in collaboration with the Manager, Administration & Finance, College of Medicine-Regina Campus, the Simulation Operations Specialist will assist in the operation and strategic development of the simulation environment focused on training medical learners in a simulated health care setting. They will work collaboratively with the DSC staff and partners to establish innovative technologies to support their courses and research projects as well as utilizing sound adult and experiential learning theories for program development, scenario development, implementation, and debriefing. In partnership with DSC staff, the incumbent will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the simulation suites, participate as a lead for various projects, and coordinate with SHA Clinical Engineering for maintenance, repairs and warranties related to simulation equipment. Working collaboratively with the team of AV/IT personnel, the Simulation Operation Specialist will help develop and advance IT capabilities in the DSC. Various courses and research projects will require videoconferencing, streaming and data collection. In collaboration with the Simulated Patient Program, this role will allow the incumbent to participate in training and evaluating Simulated Patients and Simulated Healthcare Professionals. Work maybe stressful and time sensitive and must be performed with professionalism and diplomacy. This position will require flexibility in hours; some potential evening hours as well as weekend hours. This job will require the ability to perform heavy physical labor.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Anatomy:

  • Provide lab demonstration in Gross Anatomy, Neuroanatomy and Microscopic Anatomy.
  • Provide assistance with biology laboratory work and class assignments through direct student interaction and through email.
  • Prepare and maintain human prosected specimens for Human Anatomy and Neuroanatomy courses.
  • Assist in preparing and marking the practical exams as well as delivering lab tutorials to all anatomical courses for first year medicine, dentistry, and physical therapy students as well as anatomy and neuroanatomy courses taught to Graduate, Kinesiology, and Arts and Sciences students.
  • Become familiar with and comply with all college policies and procedures
  • Become familiar with the body bequeathal program and advocate to maintain integrity and dignity of specimens while labs are in session.
  • Become familiar with and comply with all SHA policies and procedures as they relate to operation of the lab and Regina campus.
  • Maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and to students for meeting learning objectives.
  • Ensure effective use of people, materials and equipment to minimize financial expense of anatomy lab operation.
  • Be approachable and clear in student expectations.
  • Assist faculty, students, and staff to follow safe lab practices as set out by the university, provincial, and federal governments.

Simulation:

  • Collaborate with educational partners (internal and external) to implement Standards of Best practice and simulated principles (safe learning environment, fidelity), modalities (manikins, partial task trainers, and standardized patients), equipment and environment
  • Provide technical expertise in advancing simulation technology throughout the Regina Campus
  • Support the development of course curricula with simulation based education principles and technical knowledge of simulator and medical device, operation and procedures to ensure that curriculums are accurate and appropriate for available technology.
  • Assist with the operation and programing of the simulators for training sessions.
  • Setup the simulation labs, run the manikins during sessions, participate in the debriefing process as appropriate, and clean up after each session
  • Demonstrate and teach technical aspects of operating simulators to faculty members and others.
  • Support faculty, staff, researchers and students with videoconferencing technology, support for computers, mobile multimedia, virtual, and other modalities as needed.
  • Troubleshoot general maintenance of simulator hardware, software, and interconnectivity issues.
  • Provide technical expertise as technology advances healthcare education.
  • Keep abreast with latest trends in all health science disciplines.
  • Provide debriefing and feedback as needed.
  • Provide feedback to the CLRC manager from trainees and instructors concerning acceptability of facilities and equipment for training needs.
  • Maintain equipment and supply inventory for the lab.
  • Set up lab for student learning and practice sessions, and take down/clean lab after sessions.
  • Assist with practice and testing sessions by operating simulation and AV equipment for simulations.
  • Facilitating the maximum usage of available technology for educational, research and data collection support.
  • In collaboration with manager of DSC, research vendors for supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in the providing data concerning operational expenses, class attendance, equipment usage and equipment repair to the DSC Manager as input to annual plan development.
  • Participate in quality assurance controls for the simulation suites.
  • Accept leadership role in planning and executing special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:Medical Doctor (MD) degree from a Medical school in Canada or the USA or Medical Doctor Degree from schools accredited and recognized by the World Health Organization. Also considered, post- secondary degree in a Health related field and/or computer science required. Certification or license in health profession such as Paramedic, EMT, Respiratory Therapist, Registered Nurse. Working knowledge of healthcare and simulation concepts required. Advanced degrees/certifications in computer science will be considered. Certification from SSIH-CHSOS or CHSES preferred. Additional anatomy-related degrees will be an asset.

Experience:This position is intended for a recent medical graduate whose career development would benefit from a period of intensive exposure in human anatomy prior to or during specialty training. 2-4 years Health professional background required, knowledge of medical terminology, technology proficiency; 2-5 years of experience with patient simulation equipment; technical proficiency with electronic and digital medical equipment; proficiency with multimedia equipment and standard computer software applications; strong commitment to team work and inter-professionalism.

Experience working in diverse and inclusive environments is required.

Skills: Effective interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are required. The ability to work independently, collaboratively or as part of a team with other laboratory staff is imperative. Working with confidential student information in a discreet manner is essential to the position, as is the ability to interact with persons at all levels of the Department from faculty and staff, to graduate and undergraduate students. Ability and willingness to work flexible work hours, experience in collaborative initiatives and teams; analytical problem solving skills to resolve issues related to patient care scenarios; trouble shoot patient care simulators, multimedia and computer equipment problems; take initiative and work independently; detail and time oriented; highly organized; varied laboratory conditions involving mechanical, electrical, and lifting light/moderate loads; ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality required.
