As an Estimator, you will be part of the Pave, Curb & Gutter team and you will have direct accountability for preparing, submitting, and tracking estimates for the commercial, industrial, municipal, and federal segments. The Estimator plays a key role in securing work and projects for the Construction division in the Vancouver Island Area. You will directly contribute to a “One Lafarge” vision by incorporating and utilizing all of Lafarge’s materials into bids.
The Estimator contributes to organizational excellence by continually promoting a culture of agility, collaboration and empowerment (ACE) enabling continuous improvement.
As an Estimator, your responsibilities will include:
Health & Safety
Adheres and follows Lafarge’s safety and environmental policies. Ensures this is represented in bids.
Customer Focus
Direct liaison with customers, consultants and owners. Ensure that client satisfaction has been achieved
Estimating
- Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates based on efficient construction practices, and using the most competitive and reliable subcontractors and suppliers
- Prepare final bid, complete with mark-up based on market conditions, Lafarge policy and in conjunction with the Estimating Manager and/or General Manager
- Monitor project costs and financial reports. Provide feedback to operations and estimating departments
- Complete takeoffs as necessary to provide realistic and precise quotes
Market Analysis
Follow up with submitted bids to track the market and to identify strategic improvements
People Management
- Manage subcontractors, outline expectations, scheduling information and track productions
- Assist in the development of Co-op Students and Junior Estimators
Specific Accountability
- Verify contract documents and blueprints for accuracy and project materials
- Job set-up for all projects estimated and awarded to Lafarge, including credit approval, schedules, pre-construction meetings, subcontract agreements, purchase orders, as well as internal job setup for operations and accounting
- Collaborate with Superintendents when preparing bids
- Prepare contract change order pricing and ensure project costs have been accounted for and invoiced accordingly
- Assist Accounts Receivable in following up with outstanding payments
- Attend pre-tender site meetings/visits to determine if any additional site issues can impact productions
- Meeting anticipated bid closing dates
Scope/ Relationships with Others’ Jobs
- Interfaces closely with the all Estimators and Contract Administrator
- Works with Operations Superintendents
- Directly reports to the Estimating Manager
Education:
Diploma or Degree in Business or Engineering or relevant experience
Experience and Skill Set:
- Minimum of 3-5 years estimating experience
- Understanding of estimating software, specifically Bid2Win
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
- Strongcommunication, negotiation and change management skills
- Good knowledge of Paving, Asphalt and Construction industry
- Ability to foster and grow a strong safety culture
- Independent thinker
