Ultra is a global business with offices in key locations around the world. Ultra at its Halifax, Nova Scotia location is looking to hire a Trade Compliance Officer to lead and focus on compliance and management of import and export transactions including technical data, technology, hardware, software and defence services from Canada. The candidate will be part of an international team in trade compliance to ensure the business and its employees remain compliant with export controls.

An ideal candidate will be able to perform as a leader and individual contributor.

Preference is for this candidate to be located in Halifax; however, remote workers are encouraged to apply.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective customs compliance in accordance with Canadian, US, and International customs laws and regulations for both imports and exports.
  • Responsible for drafting, submitting, and managing licenses, permits and agreements (Canada Export Permits, US ITAR DSP/TAA and EAR).
  • Responsible for managing Global Affairs Canada license recordkeeping requirements and proficiency with New EXCOL systems.
  • Responsible for reviewing import and export documentation, pulling together information from stakeholders and interfacing with internal logistics team, external freight forwarders and export authorities.
  • Research and analyze classifications of commodities under Canada’s Export and Import Controls as well as US EAR and ITAR, classify commerce and defense items under ECL, CCL, USML and harmonized tariff classifications, country of origin determination, incoterms, product valuation reporting, export license applications, New EXCOL reporting, obtaining and reviewing end use statements for exports.
  • Support compliance and risk management responsibilities, to include ethics, anti-bribery and FCPA regulations
  • Provide regulatory interpretation and guidance in the following areas: Export Control Classification, Export Licensing, Trade Compliance training, Export Documentation, Record keeping, and Third-Party Due Diligence
  • Import responsibilities: document shipments to ensure that they are in compliance with customs rules and regulations, also counsel on matters like tariffs, insurance, Incoterms and quotas. This position also requires consulting with customs agents to ease passage of shipments through customs.
  • Draft policies and assist in the protection of electronic transfer of sensitive information.
  • Assist in oversight of employee’s trade compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
Required Skills:
  • 5+ years prior relevant Trade Compliance experience, preferably dealing with military goods
  • 5+ years of experience and strong knowledge of Global Affairs Canada Export and Import Controls and ITAR/EAR regulations
  • Must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)
Desired Skills:
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or Trade Compliance Certification
  • Willing to effectively coordinate simultaneous activities, and successfully prioritize multiple tasks with good judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills for accurate and effective record keeping suitable for external audit.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interface with personnel at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • Adept with utilizing computer software applications, must be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Experience with US, Australia, and UK import and export practices and regulations
  • Occasional Travel Required
