JOB SUMMARY

You are responsible for supervising, scheduling, organizing, coordinating and inspecting the work activities of contractors and city staff in multiple work locations and private homes, engaged in providing construction, installations, inspections and preventive/corrective maintenance to the water distribution systems and related appurtenances. You are responsible for leadership, general safety, problem-solving and overall quality and cost effectiveness of work that encompasses contract administration and distribution systems support.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 2 year community college diploma as a Civil or Mechanical Engineering Technician, or in a directly related field.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, preferably in a water distribution system. The incumbent must have increasingly responsible work experience, and have demonstrated the capability to directly supervise other employees.

KNOWLEDGE

  • City, department and branch by-laws, policies, procedures, standards and specifications affecting construction, preventive/corrective maintenance, and operations within/around a water distribution system.
  • Knowledge of a water distribution system
  • Knowledge of contract management and tendering processes
  • Knowledge of Principles of supervision in a unionized environment
  • Knowledge of Project management methods and practices
  • Knowledge of Regulatory requirements of the Ministry of Labour
  • Applicable legislation, codes, and standards governing water distribution systems;
  • Knowledge of job scheduling and materials requisitioning and be able to prepare specifications and contract documents.
  • Knowledge of the Water distributions Operations & Maintenance Manual (O&M)
  • Knowledge of computer systems including, MS Office Suite, PowerPoint, internet, SAP, internet, intranet and Maintenance Management Systems and software (CMMS)
  • Must be able to operate service vehicles and demonstrate the use of required tools and equipment
  • Corporate Purchasing by-law, and tendering processes for the structuring of tender quotes and tender administration procedures.
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance and be able to analyze and develop solutions to problems involving resources, scheduling, technical and other difficulties.
  • Must be able to read, understand and interpret engineering design plans, blueprints, drawings, schematics, technical manuals, and work orders.
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
