We are seeking a Senior Superintendent to join our team!

Position Summary
Responsible for leading all field operations to construct a single major project. Oversees on-site construction activities and ensures project plans and schedule are followed and that the project is executed effectively, to the required quality, safely, and within budget. Involved in and exposure to project pursuits and preconstruction activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and maintains MPX’s SHEQ management systems, including creating and influencing jobsite safety culture through mentorship and modeling and participating in the Health and Safety Committee, and influences SHEQ management system
  • Sets high standards of behaviour and leads by example at all times by complying with all HSE regulations and QA requirements including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety Act & Ontario Regulations, Environmental legislation and Quality requirements
  • Takes positive action to correct poor SHEQ practices, which reinforces the message in Multiplex Construction Canada’s policy statements
  • Supervises, directs, coaches, trains, and mentors the project team and superintendents on the same site or multiple sites
  • Takes necessary progressive disciplinary actions when needed
  • Manages escalated disciplinary issues with staff
  • Coordinates temporary works on the construction project and delegates areas or packages of the site to the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendents to be first point of contact
  • Liaises with client, other site contractors, and office representatives
  • Visualizes and plans the entire project, implements the project schedule, delivers to the critical path logic, and anticipates constructability issues and troubleshoots, and embeds solutions in the construction plans and schedules
  • Works with the project management team to develop and implement the Construction Management Plan for assigned projects
  • Ensures team members review and understand contract and subcontracts, and oversees development and implementation plan that identifies and mitigates risks
  • Ensures maintenance of project administration and complies with document requirements
  • Ensures compliance by verifying required Quality management is completed Daily Site Diary

  • Participates in a leadership role in new work pursuit through client relations, including participation in the presentation at bid
  • Stays current with industry practices and seeks new and innovative construction methods and initiatives
  • Reviews project closeouts and lessons learned and works with operations managers to address same
  • Responsible for reviewing scopes of work prior to finalizing tender documents
  • Attends and participates in client and consultant (OAC) meetings
  • Ensures prompt scheduling, coordination and effective cost control pertaining to project labor, equipment, and materials
  • Ensures superintendents perform frequent lookahead related to projected required material, equipment, and manpower
  • Provides expertise with project labor agreements and builds relationships with union and labor representatives
  • Influences training and development requirements for craft and skilled trade labor
  • Involved in selection, onboarding, and placement of field staff for assigned projects
  • Develops and implements a training and development strategy at project level
  • Creates a mentoring environment; mentors field team on technical, behavioural, and supervisory competencies
Education & Experience

  • 20 years of progressive experience in field supervision preferred
  • Journeyman certificate or postsecondary diploma/engineering degree in a related discipline
  • NCSO designation and Gold Seal certification required (CDN); certificate in negotiation or equivalent experience
Required Skills

  • Expert knowledge of and experience in the construction industry, construction trades and company operations, including building codes, building materials, construction specifications, and methods and procedures
  • Expert knowledge of project scope and mastery of applying complex engineering principles to construction challenges
  • Ability to complete value engineering and define scope and limitations for pursuits
  • Expert level experience with mentoring others on schedule, monitoring forecast resources at a high level (e.g., materials, staff, equipment)
  • Expert understanding of productivity rates, Labor Cost Reports, and ability to interpret cost reports
  • Thorough understanding of contract language and ability to identify and mitigate risks, and identify and leverage opportunities
  • Ability to create a detailed labour forecast for upcoming month and determine if there are adequate resources
  • Understanding of collective agreement, and collective agreement & jurisdiction assignment for multi-trade sites across ICI and residential sectors
  • Ability to lead and run effective site meetings with the client, consultants, trades, self-perform, and internal employees; ability to present at client meetings or for project pursuit work

  • Experience in mitigating grievance and employee relations issues
  • Expert knowledge of and application of Health, Safety and Environmental principles/procedures/legislation and demonstrated experience implementing a strong Health and Safety culture
  • Knowledge of virtual construction software and tools
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and internal operational systems and is up-to-date with all current technology
