Duties

The researcher is expected to manage multiple projects in a multidisciplinary setting requiring collaboration with other scientific teams. They will be expected to seek internal and external funding and collaborators to support the research program and to effectively manage resources to achieve the desired outcomes. The scientist will directly supervise staff, and may mentor and train post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.

Work environment

The position requires scientific innovation and leadership in the area hydrological process representation in agricultural environments. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists at the Brandon Research Development Centre working on developing or improving models and algorithms at the plot, landscape or watershed scales. The incumbent will have access to state-of the-art laboratories (including expertise and resources for soil-water analysis) and research field sites and will have the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders in academia and industry. Research Scientists have access to competitive core and external funding opportunities, and are supported by technical and administrative staff. Research Scientists are encouraged to seek university affiliation and co-supervise graduate students.

Education:
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of science with a specialization related to Hydrology, Soil Physics or other relevant discipline related to this opportunity.

Applications will be accepted from candidates enrolled in their final year, but who have not yet completed a Ph.D. program. Completion of the Ph.D. thesis must occur before the date of appointment.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, peer-reviewed scientific journals, or other communications resulting from:
a) Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems; OR
b) Operational research and scientific analysis; OR
c) Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development; OR
d) Developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment.
e) Experience interacting with industry and other stakeholders to garner support and research direction.

Experience developing or improving models and algorithms and using modeling for hydrological process representation in agricultural environments.

Experience in modelling of hydrological processes at multiple spatial scales (field, farm, and watershed scales).

Experience writing grant applications.
Experience working on a multi-disciplinary science team.
Experience managing multi-year projects with associated human resource, budgetary, and planning functions.
Experience in Geographic Information System (GIS) and spatial modeling skills.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of modeling and process of water movement in agricultural systems with both snowmelt and rainfall.
Knowledge of agricultural land use practices and management systems that minimize excess moisture and that minimize deficiencies in water availability.
Knowledge of ecology, agronomy, hydrology, soil and nutrients dynamics.
Knowledge of the techniques and methods used to develop hydrological models.
