DEPARTMENT/ LAB DESCRIPTION:

Department of Anesthesia & Pain Management & Wasser Pain Management Centre, provides patient care, education and research in the area of chronic, disabling pain disorders. We conduct research in design and development of innovative management of acute and chronic pain.


POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Research Assistant will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator/Research Manager providing overall coordination of research projects. The assistant will work under the general direction of the Principal Investigator to initiate and implement research studies and support research network activities. Research study activities typically include literature reviews, ethics applications, recruitment, follow-up with participants, assisting with writing and editing reports and manuscripts, and working with funding agencies as required. Research network activities include: coordinating meetings and webinars, preparing materials, report writing support, and engaging with local and international network members.

The successful candidate will work with the team on a number of research projects a primary focus will be pain management for patients suffering from acute and chronic pain.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to identify, recruit and consent eligible participants in research trials
  • Confirm participant eligibility with Principal Investigator and Research Manager
  • Conduct interviews, focus groups, including in-person and telephone calls
  • Maintenance of research files to access and retrieve data as specified
  • Coordinate all aspects of study data collection and data entry and quality control
  • Assist Principal Investigator and Research Manager in completion of Research Ethics Board (REB) applications and grant submissions for funding (as required)
  • Assist Principal Investigator and Research Manager in preparation of materials for progress reports, presentations and publications
  • Prepare and mail out follow-up questionnaires to study subjects and collaborating centers (where required)
  • Basic administrative duties including filing and photocopying
  • Preparing scientific manuscripts and reports
  • Perform necessary quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and completeness of the research data
  • Contribute to the efficient day-to-day operations of the research unit

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University undergraduate degree in a related specialty (Biological or Health Sciences)
  • Two years experience in a healthcare setting working in a research capacity
  • Database experience preferred
  • Proficiency in computer applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator
  • Strong relational and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Sound decision-making and problem solving skills - works well under pressure and uses good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work well with a team and to use initiative in achieving goals
  • Able to work independently
  • Professional behavior and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Mount Sinai Hospital
  • This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all
  • Certification as a Clinical Research Professional an asset
  • Ability to manage several concurrent tasks while meeting predetermined time lines
  • Comprehensive knowledge of organizational/office/research practices, procedures and standards
  • Good understanding of medical terminology and research methods
