CBC North is seeking (1) full-time permanent reporter/editor, based in Yellowknife and assigned to weekends. The schedule is from Friday to Tuesday.

As a Reporter/Editor, your primary objective is to perform reporting and editorial assignments related to the gathering, writing and presentation of program material for all three of our media platforms: radio, television and web.
You will develop and maintain contact with a variety of sources as well as work in close co-operation with your program unit. You will have demonstrated success in your role by gathering and reporting information from various sources, conducting an analysis of the facts and information gathered, drawing conclusions or raising issues requiring further investigation, and contributing ideas, written scripts, and program content.
You will also, as required, critically edit material written by others, present information and/or analysis on air in a variety of formats, and perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station. Your work will be governed by CBC’s journalistic and broadcasting policy and protocols.
In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You’re innovative and will champion new story treatments and new workflows, and will help create a diverse range of content on our radio, television, digital and social platforms. You’re not afraid to take creative risks, and you inspire others to do the same.
As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and changing population across the NWT and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

- A strong, demonstrated understanding of the NWT and pan-Northern political and cultural landscape.
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills: must be a team player.
- Must be able to solve problems independently and in-group discussions (openness to new ideas and approaches).
- Initiative, flexibility, creativity and curiosity.
- Working knowledge of digital news including social media, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), story analytics, storytelling styles.
- Demonstrated ability to use social media and other resources to build contacts and sources.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently and meet multiple deadlines and handle multiple story chases.
- Must be capable of original and creative thought in the production of news for online, radio, and social media skills.
- Experience in booking interview guests, developing lines of questioning, writing focused introductions and preparing and writing tape segments.
- Ability to interact with the public on the phone and in person.
- Ability to travel within Northern Canada on assignment.
- Ability to work flexible hours and overtime, if required.
- Ability to work full time hours through Saturdays and Sundays is a strict requirement.
- A post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience along with 3 years of experience relevant to journalism, during which the candidate has gained exposure to journalism, computers, social media and the technology of radio or television broadcasting, is preferred.
