Relief Mental Health Workers, Crisis Services

We are expanding our pool of Relief Mental Health Workers in the Crisis Services Department. This role has potential to work shifts in programs across the Crisis Services Department; however, eligibility for shifts in specific programs will be at the discretion of the Manager and based on program needs and suitability, we are currently seeking individuals with an interest in working with the Crisis Response Team - London. Relief Mental Health Workers will provide mobile response to individuals in crisis, assessing the nature and scope of the crisis and taking appropriate action while l also working with individuals at the time of their crisis to identify needs and provide connections with services and supports in the community.

We are currently seeking candidates with open availability for all shifts, including weekdays and weekends; including day, afternoon, evening, and overnight shifts. Shift length in these programs varies, up to and including 12-hour shifts. Relief staff have flexibility to accept shifts that suit their schedules but will commit to accepting a minimum of three shifts per month. While the minimum shift requirement is currently three shifts per month, Relief staff have the ability to pick up shifts at their discretion up to a maximum of 44 hours per week, and will also be eligible for optional enrollment into the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP).

A professional designation as BSW, MSW, RN, OT or Counsellor and registration with the corresponding college is preferred for this role. Experience using therapeutic approaches in working with individuals in a mental health and/or addiction crisis is a necessity and crisis intervention and prevention training is required.

Successful candidates must have a Police Vulnerable Sector Check completed in the last six months. In order to avoid delays in beginning a position, interested applicants who reside in the City of London and are in need of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) are encouraged to apply for one as soon as possible as PVSCs in the City of London are currently taking approximately 2 weeks to be delivered and offers of employment cannot be made without receipt of a PVSC.

Job Specifications:

Required Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field of study e.g. social work, psychology, or a related discipline
  • Training in crisis intervention and crisis resolution, including ASIST
  • Knowledge of community resources, service and support programs, and barriers clients face in accessing same
  • Working knowledge of a variety of treatment, intervention, and support strategies for mental health and addictions
  • Computer literacy
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working in mental health
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in mental health crisis intervention
  • Experience with, and detailed knowledge of, mild, moderate & serious mental illnesses, usually gained by several years of working with this population
  • Experience working in a community-based setting; preferably with an established network of service & support resources
  • Ability to assess client level of risk
  • Ability to attend work regularly
  • Current, clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)

Requirements specific to Crisis Response Team shifts:
  • Valid Driver’s Licence

Preferred Qualifications / Experiences / Qualities:
  • Registration with a professional college (i.e. OCSWSSW, CNO, CRPO, CPSO, COTO, CPO)
  • Proficiency in the areas of crisis intervention, crisis resolution, and community support
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • First Aid & CPR, WHMIS
  • Bilingual in both official languages is an asset
Hours of Work:
  • Varying; within a 24/7 program with particular emphasis on overnight and weekend shifts
  • Shifts up to 12 hours in length
  • Hours subject to Director’s discretion/program needs
  • Relief staff must commit to working a minimum of three shifts a month and keep availability information updated with manager for unscheduled shifts
