Primary Purpose: The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada) is accepting applications for a three-year Postdoctoral Fellow position. The successful candidate will work full-time across two projects focused on contributing to climate-smart agriculture in Canada by promoting the adoption of climate-smart pulse crops and nitrogen-efficient wheat.

Nature of Work: This research contributes to two pan-Canadian projects focused on the promotion of climate-smart agriculture: ACTIVATing genomics to accelerate climate-smart crop delivery, and Pea Climate-Efficient: Developing climate-resilient, low carbon footprint field pea as a preferred rotation crop through inter-disciplinary integration of genomic technologies. Under the co-supervision of Dr. Nicholas Tyack (Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics) and Dr. Yang Yang (Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy), the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary research team from multiple domestic and international institutions, co-author peer-reviewed publications, and participate in professional conferences.

Accountabilities:The Post-Doctoral Fellow’s duties will involve assisting and carrying out research within the two projects described above, including activities such as: identifying producer constraints to adoption of climate-smart crop rotations; modeling the climate benefits of climate-efficient pea adoption; developing a GHG emission calculator for climate-smart crop rotation; and assessing consumer preferences for climate-smart food products and/or novel traits in pea products.

Education: Applicants are expected to hold a PhD in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or a similar field (or have obtained one by fall 2024).

Licenses: A valid driver’s license is a potential asset, but not required.

Experience: A background in agricultural and environmental economics and policy and previous experience with developing metrics of climate efficiency, discrete choice experiments, use of crop models such as DNDC or DayCent, farmer surveys, and/or economic analysis of consumer acceptance of products with novel traits is desired.

Skills: Skills in dynamic modeling, carrying out producer surveys, whole-farm GHG modeling, survey design, measuring GHG emission measurement/modeling in crops, and discrete choice experiments are considered an asset.
