The Clean Technology program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) provides applied research expertise and services to develop solutions rooted in circular economy principles with applications relevant to our industry partners in the Provincial energy, petrochemical, and bioeconomy sectors.
Led by Dr. Paolo Mussone, Ovintiv Applied Research Chair in Energy, The Clean Technologies team is a diverse, highly multidisciplinary group of professionals and students with broad industry and academic experience in chemical engineering, applied chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental science, and industrial microbiology.
The successful candidates for the position will be an enthusiastic and ambitious individual whose professional goal is to help shape the circular economy in Alberta and beyond. We are looking for highly motivated team players who are comfortable with high-risk high-reward projects, who are patient, resilient, and tenacious, who have sense of humor and who are unabashedly passionate about hands-on learning and mentoring the next generation. The ideal candidate for this position has deep, demonstrated working knowledge of analytical chemistry and can exemplify how to apply complex scientific concepts to deliver solutions in a real-world environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fulfill the role as subject matter expert in polymer science and engineering and provide high level technical support and leadership for the Clean Technologies team pertaining to chemical and material analysis.
  • Support the team in developing and optimizing methods for evaluation of polymer properties and performance
  • Develop, perform and optimize methods and techniques for testing for the characterization of the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of industrial polymers.
  • Operate a wide array of state-of-the-art chromatography and spectroscopy instrumentation housed in industry solutions to solve complex laboratory problems pertaining to chemical analysis.
  • Integrate, improve, and develop laboratory practices and quality control elements into the team’s laboratory process to ensure equipment performs with a high degree of precision and accuracy with an emphasis on data quality.
  • Assist the Clean Technologies team in expanding the technical scope of the lab ensuring the facility meets the growing demands of the group’s projects and client base by leading new instrumentation purchases and installation as well as pairing suitable instrument accessories and sample preparation ancillary equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory in optimal state including general housekeeping, chemical inventory/ handling, and updating safety protocols, and performing basic maintenance tasks.
  • Communicate results and observations effectively between project teams and industry partners as needed.
  • Cooperate in meetings, troubleshooting activities, and prototype optimization
  • Write reports/presentations summarizing the data obtained using Word, Excel, and Power Point.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience in industrial manufacturing setting is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with standardized procedures (ASTM, etc.) is a must.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and optimize methods.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter, strong team player, ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, MS Teams is required.

Qualifications:

  • Related Master’s degree is required
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in routine and advanced polymer testing techniques
  • Professional accreditation (P.Eng. or PChem) is a strong asset.

Remuneration:$2,660.87 - $3,569.36 bi-weekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (AUPE Classification – Research Associate)
This position is covered by the AUPE (Alberta Union of Provincial Employees) Collective Agreement.
