This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Pharmacy Services, the Pharmacy Practice Assistant participates in the provision of safe, competent, patient or family centered ethical care, ensuring goals and needs of the patient are prioritized and individualized. The Pharmacy Practice Assistant prepares, packages and dispenses medication under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. Responsibilities include packaging of sterile and non-sterile dosage forms, dispensing drugs to inpatients and outpatients in unit dose, traditional and IVA systems, compounding sterile and non-sterile products, preparation of chemotherapy doses, distributing narcotics and participating in quality programs.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of a recognized pharmacy technician/technology program (accredited program preferred). Candidates with commensurate experience and education will be considered
  • Two years experience as a hospital pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, an asset
  • Licensure in Nova Scotia as a Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) is an asset
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with hazardous and non-hazardous sterile admixtures are an asset
  • Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medications
  • Knowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and controlled drugs
  • Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours of Work
  • Long Assignment, Full Time; 75 hours bi-weekly

Salary Information

$21.74 - $24.63 hourly
