An exciting position has become available for the role of Manager Simulation & Modelling at XPS, a Glencore company based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The Group is well equipped to support the activities of modelling and virtual simulations for plant processes ranging from simple processing circuits to complex operations in extractive metallurgy and chemical processing industries. We provide clients with expert knowledge of feasibility studies, detailed design real-time digital twin model development, thermodynamic process simulation and complex CFD and FEA studies. We complement our skills with the knowledge of our XPS partners in the fields of hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, process control , materials technology and process mineralogy.

The primary functions of the Manager Simulation & Modelling are to:

  • Manage the day to day operations of the Simulation & Modelling business
  • Provide and develop specialized knowledge and expertise for our clients and share his/her existing knowledge with the team (educate and mentor)
  • Write project proposals and market the XPS business
  • Manage projects by meeting turnaround (schedule), quality and safety standards
  • Supervise and mentor departmental personnel
  • Project responsibilities range from laboratory test work to operations support
  • The incumbent ought to envisions himself/herself as a technical manager with a keen business sense. S/he will focus on people and process, business management and personal marketable technical/consulting expertise
  • Specialization in computational fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, reactive flow, finite element analysis, thermochemistry, thermal structure interaction, solid mechanics and other physics areas.
  • Process simulation/modelling for new or existing metallurgical plants, using SysCAD, ChemApp, PHREEQC, .
  • Chemical thermodynamic modelling is fundamental as well as understanding of thermodynamic database development.
  • Ability to develop software-based interfaces or to maintain existing interfaces developed by XPS to combine and link the various software tools mentioned as well as to provide new interfaces for the development of digital twin modelling of industrial metallurgical processes.

The incumbent will be responsible for the financial aspects, cost controls and assessment of competitiveness. The incumbent is also expected to participate in operations support, which includes a focus on improving safety, process, troubleshooting/optimization and metallurgical plant improvement. In this role, you are a consultant to Operations personnel and assist in developing schedules and execution of continuous improvement projects.

Education/Experience/Skills

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in metallurgical engineering or related degree and/or related experience in process simulation, CFD, heat transfer, thermochemistry.
  • A minimum of 12 years of relevant work experience
  • Excellent knowledge of transport phenomena, chemical thermodynamics and Multiphysics simulation.
  • Knowledge of commercial CFD/Multiphysics software (COMSOL preferred)
  • Knowledge of commercial thermodynamic software (FactSage, ChemApp, PHREEQC, optionally: OLI, AQSOL)
  • Knowledge of commercial flowsheet mass and energy balance software (SysCAD or Metsim)
  • Experience in programming (c, c++, c#, python)
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in problem solving
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to thrive in a dynamic team
  • Excellent ability to analyse, synthesize and prepare concise reports
  • A proactive and autonomous nature, with an ability to work and prioritize multiple projects in parallel in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in supervising technical teams
  • An acute business sense and entrepreneurial spirit; experience with financial/budge responsibilities
  • The ability to multi-task, be self-motivated, and self-directed
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong computer application skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven time management skills and strong attention to detail
