Purpose

The Manager, Financial Reporting & Complex Accounting demonstrates strong accounting standards (U.S. GAAP) knowledge, is accountable for performing accounting research, providing accounting guidance, supporting Algonquin Power and Utilities Company quarterly and year-end finance activities as well as managing complex accounting.

This role works closely with functional finance teams across the board.

Accountabilities
  • Provide accounting research and analysis of significant contracts and complex accounting transactions
  • Provide accounting research on new accounting and reporting developments
  • Assess the impact of accounting changes on financial statements, procedures and internal controls
  • Assist with recommendation/advise finance / business accordingly
  • Assist with compliance to financial reporting requirements for SEC registrants
  • Assist with dual reporting requirements (US GAAP and regulatory accounting)
  • Keep abreast of current and proposed accounting standards/practices
  • Keeping current with current company activity/business development;
  • Manage finance and accounting activities related to complex accounting matters such as:
    • acquisition due diligence, purchase equation and integration of newly acquired businesses into the Company’s finance and accounting systems
    • pension and other post employment benefits
    • financial instruments and derivatives
    • property, plant & equipment complexities (cost of removal, aid in construction, asset retirement obligations, etc)
    • recognition of revenue
    • fair value measurement
    • Variable interest entities
  • Support Algonquin Power and Utilities Company quarterly and year-end finance activities
  • Support Algonquin Power and Utilities Company quarterly reviews and year-end audit activities
  • Participates in planning, developing and delivering financial reporting training programs
Education and Experience
  • Professional accounting designation such as CA, CPA
  • 7-10 years of accounting experience
  • Experience in utilities (rate-regulated) industry
  • Expert understanding of US GAAP
  • Expert understanding of regulated / utility accounting
  • Understanding of IFRS is a plus
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong analytical skills
  • Strong strategic thinker, growth-orientation
  • Presents quick decision-making skills
  • Team player and adaptable to change
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Extensive knowledge of Great Plains (or equivalent accounting package)
