MANAGER, FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING AND REPORTING

JDI Finance, a part of Irving Business Services, has over 250 accounting professionals providing accounting and reporting, business analysis and transactional services to the seven different operating divisions of J.D. Irving, Limited. It is a collaborative organization of dedicated financial professionals offering many careers paths within finance and across our diverse businesses. JDI’s corporate office is located at 300 Union Street, Saint John, NB, E2L 4M3.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our JDI Finance team and showcase these talents in the role of Manager, Financial Accounting and Reporting. As the successful applicant for this opportunity, you will be located at Irving Shipbuilding at 35 Mic Mac Boulevard, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, B3A 4Y8 focused on our Shipbuilding Division.

This is a full-time permanent position based in the Halifax Regional Municipality and the primary language of work is English.

Irving Shipbuildingis in the business of building and repairing vessels. The Company’s primary site, the Halifax Shipyard has been at the forefront of Canadian shipbuilding for 130 years. Irving Shipbuilding is currently working on a number of significant projects for the Department of National Defense as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, as well as the Canadian Coast Guard. Qualifications:


  • 8+ years of relevant accounting work experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree and a professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • Previous financial reporting experience in a marine business environment (ship repair, ship building or ship design) is required;
  • Experience interacting with Engineers and Finance leaders, in a financial capacity, in a marine business environment (ship repair, ship building or ship design) is required;
  • Previous project management experience
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, including development and management of a team
  • Ability to prepare and develop reports that provide insight to the business, including financial statements, period and quarterly reporting packages
  • Strong technical accounting skills and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; ability to apply financial theory to operational situations
  • Experience with business partnering and working with cross-functional teams
  • A pro-active approach, continuous improvement mindset and problem-solving skills are required
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required to work with various internal and external parties
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, is a necessity
The successful applicant must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), and Canadian Government Security clearance.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for reviewing financial statements and related reports including: periodic financial reporting packages, weekly reports, standard variance reporting, performance summaries, quarterly review reporting, related party transactions
  • Provide business partnering support within JDI Finance and Irving Shipbuilding
  • Lead and assist on special projects within JDI Finance and Irving Shipbuilding
  • Ad hoc reporting requests
  • Management of the external audit
  • Mentoring and coaching of accounting staff
