Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting a part-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Salisbury Composite High School.

Commencing A.S.A.P.

Ending June 28, 2022

30 hours per week (6 hours per day)

Salisbury Composite High School is a 10 – 12 school with approximately 1200 students, 60 teaching staff and 25 support staff. The school is located within Sherwood Park, Alberta. Salisbury has a diverse culture that encompasses all levels of learning. Students can choose from a wide selection of courses in Fine Arts, Career and Technology Studies and Physical Education. Our students have the opportunity to participate in a robust athletics program, student leadership and school clubs.

Licensed Practical Nurse

As part of a classroom-based team, this position provides services for students who have medical conditions or major functional limitations. The incumbent attends to the medical and personal care needs of a student(s) in the classroom with severe disabilities, conditions, and disorders. The needs could include, but are not limited to, requirement for g-tube feeding, ostomy care, lifting, tracheostomy care, seizure monitoring, feeding, monitoring risk of choking and mobility exercises.

The LPN provides routine and repetitive instructional support. Under the direction of the teacher, assists the students in acquiring the education and skills necessary for advancement in the educational setting. To reach this objective, the LPN follows an individually prescribed learning program, through team planning and working one-on-one with the student. This involves routine recording, basic charting, and logging of observations on anecdotal record sheets or data sheets.

Student Assistance and Personal/Medical Care:
Perform health care related tasks, such as monitoring vital signs, administering medication, G-tube and ostomy care

Performs/assists student(s) with physical requirements and activities of daily living

Evaluates, observes, reports and documents change in student(s) medical status and deviation from anticipated response

Participate in case reviews, consult with the educational team, multi-disciplinary team and therapeutic specialists to evaluate the student’s progress and services performed, report changes to the educational team

Identify factors which have an effect on various types of health conditions (e.g., glucose control for the diabetic) and develop solutions.

Provide input into the Individual Program Plan process with a focus on health and wellness

Collect information and maintain medical logs and/or documentation

Assists other students in the classroom when appropriate

Education and Experience:
Post-secondary education from an approved nursing education program with College of Licensed Practical Nurse of Alberta registration

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations

Understanding of district and departments operations and business; school systems and structures, community services for children and families,

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to understand non-verbal communication and behaviors

Strong needs assessment and analytical skills

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make quick decisions

Flexible with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Ability to work with a wide variety of students with varied needs

Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaborate with inter-disciplinary teams

Willing and able to keep information about clients confidential

Ability to use tact and judgement in dealing with difficult situations

Responsible to provide proof of active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLP NA) and to maintain registration throughout the duration of employment

Physically able to meet the demands the job and be able to keep in an active classroom.

Working Conditions:
Because of the nature of the work the incumbent is constantly in contact with students which could result in exposure to viruses, bodily fluids, and contaminated medical equipment.
