Position Overview
The Library Service Associate (LSA) is responsible for the daily provision of library services for Saskatoon Public Library (SPL) at the assigned branch location. The majority of the work of the LSA involves actively assisting patrons who are accessing library services. The LSA may also work outside the branch at events in the community.

This position predominantly works with the public at the neighbourhood branch. This position involves regular interactions with people who attend the library for research, to attend programs, and to access library services and collections. The LSA also assists library patrons experiencing physical and mental barriers, as well as marginalization and/or social exclusion.

The LSA works cooperatively with colleagues at the library to ensure that the daily operational needs are met.

Key Duties

1. Circulation & customer service:Circulation of library material; assisting patrons to use quick checkouts; creating and managing patron accounts; resolving routine patron concerns; and escalating concerns as necessary.

2. Reference & readers’ advisory:Responding to information inquiries, including reference interviews, readers’ advisory, and helping patrons access/use library technologies.

3. Administrative duties:Room bookings; routine financial transactions; cash handling; entering patron incidents and other statistics into databases; and sending letters and other communications as required to assist the Senior Library Service Associate or Senior Manager.

4. Operational duties:Opening and closing duties; daily branch operations; creating displays; supply ordering and organizing; and operational oversight.

5. Events:Giving library tours and hosting programs.

6. Outreach:Participating in library outreach services, programs and events in the community.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Library and Information Technology diploma ORtwo years post-secondary, plus completion of two SPL-approved library- related courses, which may be completed after hire. Degrees and diplomas must be from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of one year experience within the past five years working directly with the public.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities in the stated accountabilities and competencies.
  • A current, acceptable Criminal Record Check.
